And he answered, “Go.†And one said, “Be content, please, and go with your servants.†And he answered them, “I will go.†And he went with them. And they came to Jordan, and they cut down trees.
And it happened as one was felling a log, the axe-head fell into the water. And he cried and said, “Alas, master! For it was borrowed.†And the man of God said, “Where did it fall?†And he showed him the place.
And he cut down a stick and threw it in there. And the iron swam. And he said, “take it up to you.†And he put out his hand and took it.
In the story above which is from a bible passage in 2 Kings 6:1-7, the prophet’s son must have exercised enough care in how he used the axe. The accident could have happened whether the axe was borrowed or not. However, this is an example of an accident that had a happy ending. Like in the case of my young niece who wanted to dye her hair a dark brown shade, but instead the results of the mixed formulas gave her a purplish glow. Her friends were quite chaffed with the new look, and they complimented her. That was all she needed to get over the disappointment of not getting the other new hair-do she had planned for.
Accidents will always happen, and that is why we have insurance companies. But not all accidents have a happy ending. People have been injured, crippled or died through traffic accidents. That is why it is crucial to be always on the alert when driving. We might not be able to control all factors but we can at least take measures to protect ourselves and those around us by driving carefully and observing the road regulations.
In 1 Peter 5:8, the Bible warns us about an opponent out there, the devil, who is looking for an opportunity to destroy our lives. He has a myriad ways up his sleeves on how he can derail a Christian’s life. Eve was taking a casual walk in the Garden of Eden, where God had placed her and her husband Adam, when the devil gently placed doubts in her heart and she committed the first sin ever known. (Genesis 3).
We must always be alert and sober minded in terms of our relationship with God. Being casual about it can lead us to unholy accidents, some of which will result in unhappy consequences. But should we fail, even when we have been trying to live an honourable life, we have a Savior Jesus Christ who is willing to forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9). But remember that even though an insurance company can replace a loss, the effects of the accidents can last a lifetime.
