Topic: A MIGHTY FORTRESS (don't write about the song) (04/23/15)
This is a real story from an American missionary during a song service many years ago. A young Christian then but it still lingers in my memory.

I remember it rather vividly. A church in the Orient was holding her evening service, and a terrific buzz of praising God in hymns engrossed everybody's attention. Suddenly, the congregation hushed, as a group of militiamen carrying machine guns and grenades stormed in. Nobody expected it! They did not know what to do, and neither did they know what they would do to them.

A fierce-looking leader of the militia, boomed, "I gave you two choices. You either deny Christ by spitting on this Bible and live, or choose to remain as Christians and die for your faith." He pointed at a Bible he picked up from a pew and placed it on the pulpit.

A deep silence fell on the congregation. Some bowed their heads and trembled in great fear. Others kept absolutely mum. The rest of the congregation stared at their deacons. The deacons then looked at each other in their eyes as if waiting for someone to make a clear move.

Soon the silence was broken. One of the deacons walked towards the pulpit and spat at the Bible. Shortly it was followed by another, and then another. And before long a young sobbing girl dashed towards the Bible. She then wiped off the sputum with her sweeping straight jet-black hair and grabbed it tight, close to her chest.

" I 've believed in Jesus all these years, and He's never failed me even once. How can I deny my Jesus now?" shrieked the teary eyed girl.

She refused to let anybody spit at the Book again.

The rest of the congregation was stunned by her action. At last they decided to stand on her side, refusing to give in to the threat.

Those gun-toting guys ordered the young dissenter, together with others, out of the building.

As soon as they cleared the church, three tragic gunshots rang through the cold air. The unemotional spokesperson of the militia began to address the group.

" We in the communist regime want people who are committed to join us; and if they can deny Christ, they will also deny us."

Wow, what a close shave! --a defiant act that inspired daring faith in others. Beyond doubt, the Lord must be a mighty fortress to the young heroic girl who took refuge in Him. What's more, her boldness had led others to trust in their God who is a Mighty Fortress in the great crisis of their life, unquestionably. To draw strength, especially when life hits the doldrums, I'll usually recall this amazing testimony to cheer up my soul.

The young girl's light was brilliant that day, and not doubt continues to this point in time.

Sad that the three Deacons were shot. However, I was glad to see others were spared due to their unwavering faith.

Nice job relating the story. It moved and moved. There was no point at which I didn't want to know what happened next. Well done.
