By supper I had finished my book. “Oh Papa it was marvelous. I have never read anything like it.” I took a dainty nibble of the mutton on the serving tray then drank from the goblet my servant had placed in the table. Papa smiled at me, “I am so glad you enjoyed your story.” I moved a few grapes around my plate with my pinky finger. I always do this when I am nervous and father didn’t miss it. “Anything you want to say my dear?” I nodded “Well Papa it got me thinking, I want to find a suitor of my own.” I had been staring down at my plate, when I looked up I saw my father gazing intently at me. “Very well.”
That next morning we headed off to the stables. The servants had readied up my supplies and brought me my horse. I kissed Papa goodbye and was off before dawn. I had gone but an hour when it started to rain and my horse began to fumble. I looked down at his feet to see that we were in a deep bog. I had somehow led him into it. Panicked I got off my horse and tried to pull him out of the sticky mud that was now up to my knees. My riding boots were stuck and somehow when I was jumping off of the horse my cloak got snagged on a branch over head. To make matters worse the rain was coming down in sheets, I couldn’t see anything. I had just about given up when I felt arms grab me and hoist my up from my under arms. “Father?”
When my feet hit solid ground I turned and saw a young man no more than my age staring down at me. “No Princess your Father has not come for you this time.” He said, his voice was like that of a frogs. The man had a vise’s grip on my arm. “Let me go.” I commanded. The man smiled, “Your not going anywhere, until your daddy pays the price.” the hand that wasn’t holding me swung back and the world went black.
When I woke up I was in a cell. I grabbed my cloak and pressed it against me when I saw a light. Just a sliver near the door. I began to hear footsteps and the jangling of keys. My heart sped up, I carefully rose up from the dirty floor. The footsteps were right outside my door now. The keys clanged together one last time, and the door burst open.
I woke up in my bed. Home. I was home. My father came into my room. “Papa!” I sobbed. He sat down on my bed and explained what had happened. I had been taken by a bandit who wanted his money. I had been gone for two days when the news came to his ears. He left immediately. He found me because a young girl had seen me being dragged in the rain past her village. She told him I had been taken into the Old Mill. When he arrived at the mill he smited the man that had taken me.
When I heard all of this I began to sob. “Oh Papa thank you. Why did you come? I wondered so far.” His eyes crinkled as his smile broadened, “I came because I love you.” he laid his hand on mine. “My child I already have a spouse for you, be patient he is coming.” I wrinkled my nose, “Then why did you let me leave to find my own love?” His face became serious. “Because I had to give you a choice.”
