Come again another day.
Little Johnny wants to play,
Rain, rain, go away.”
John sang the childhood rhyme to himself as he looked out the window. The weather fit his melancholy mood perfectly. It wasn’t anything big. His marriage was fine. His children were healthy. It was just one of those days when all the little things piled up, making quite the mountain out of a molehill. His boss had yelled at him for something one of his co-workers did. His wife was upset because he forgot to do his laundry and she had to do it. Again. His kids were sad because they couldn’t go to the pumpkin patch. It was just one of those days. It thundered. John smiled as another childhood memory came to mind. “The angles are moving the furniture” his mother used to say, when he got scared of the thunder.
Despite the absurdity of being scared of thunder, John couldn’t help but think of the power thunder had. Oh sure, it was the lightning that was the real destructive force. But it was the thunder that sounded so powerful. So deep. So, so… loving.
Loving? How could thunder be loving? Thunder reminded John of the voice of God, speaking to him in the catacombs of his heart where no one else could hear. Sometimes, what God was telling him didn’t appeal to him. Like the time God told him, in that deep yet loving voice, that he was spending too much time at work. Or the time it reminded him that his heart was far from God. How God spoke to him like that when everything else seemed so far away from Him, John didn’t know. I guess, he thought, it’s like when someone comes to know Christ for the first time. It’s not always discernible at first, but eventually they hear the deep, loving voice of Christ in the catacombs of their hearts.
John looked out the window again. He couldn’t deny that this rain was needed. The flowers were wilting and the grass was turning brown. The streets needed the cleansing washing from the rain. So did his car, for that matter. As he continued his ponderings, the rain began to let up. He could hear delightful screams and looked up to see his children dancing in the rain. The sun peeked out, and the birds began to sing once again. As the rain lifted, so did John’s mood. John smiled weakly at the lessons God had just reminded him of through a simple rain shower. He began to sing a new song.
“I trembled at the voice of God
A voice of love and thunder deep.
With love he means to save us all,
And love has chosen you and me.”
--Andrew Peterson and Ben Shive
Truly, God used the rain today to speak to him in a voice of love and thunder deep.
