Unfortunately my mind is not as sharp as Mr. Lewis’ and my command of logic is not as great as his either so I would like to show that anger can be good by telling a story, a parable if you will.
Little Davey stood there, ten years old and having fun on a spring afternoon playing kickball with other kids in the neighborhood. Friendly little Davey had no idea he was about to enter battle. Laughing at some antic of a friend, he didn’t see the ornery fifteen year old sneaking up behind him. He didn’t see the older boy, Mike, until Mike’s hand was shoving a handful of dirt into his mouth.
Spitting out the dirt Davey stewed and began to quietly consider what to do. He wasn’t a fighter. He liked everyone he knew. But he was angry and he knew he could not let this go. Davey knew what he had to do. He felt he had no choice. It helped that his anger outweighed any fear he felt. The adrenalin fueled his body. Davey stared at Mike who having nothing to fear from Davey hadn’t left the scene but had gone back to brag to the other older boys sitting on the swings nearby.
Davey bent over and scooped up as much dirt as his little hand would hold and slowly walked in the direction of the swings. He knew Mike wouldn’t expect what he had planned.
Mike, a good two foot taller than Davey, was sitting on the swing and still laughing turned to look over his shoulder to see what his friends were looking at. “URRFFFF” was sound the Mike made as Davey shoved his hand deep inside Mike’s mouth and very methodically dropped the load of dirt on his tonsils. And then Davey RAN!
Of course a ten year old’s legs are less than half the size of a fifteen year old’s so he didn’t make much ground before he was caught, spun around and thrown to the ground. Sitting on Davey’s chest, Mike yelled out of his muddy mouth “ARE YOU INSANE! DO YO HAVE ANY IDEA HOW BAD I’M GONNA HURT YOU? WHY WOULD YOU THINK YOU COULD DO THAT!?” Davey replied “What made you think you could do that to me? I don’t care what you do to me but I will NEVER let you get away with treating me that way. You can beat me if you want but I promise you I will keep coming back and do EXACTLY to you what you do to me. Get used to it or kill me. Even if you choose killing me I’ll be satisfied because your life will be ruined and I won’t have to take this from you. But if you choose not to, either leave me alone or be ready ‘cause I will be coming. You pick.”
Mike jumped up, kicked the dirt and wiped the mud from the corners of his mouth as he walked slowly back to his friends on the swing. He wasn’t laughing anymore as meeting his match in a ten year old had given him something to think about. Davey and Mike always got along after that day.
Davey used anger and righteous indignation to defeat his Goliath. When good people see evil they must hate the evil and get angry enough to do something about it. It is not enough to wish it didn’t exist. Sometimes YOU must be the one to do something to end it and sometimes that takes getting mad. Some things are worth fighting for.
Ephesians 4:26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your wrath. (NKJ)
Romans 12:9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. (NIV)

He was a great supporter of the Roman Catholic church.
Although he never converted to the Roman Catholic Church.
A life long bachelor, Lewis began a love affair with an American woman named Joy Davidman Gresham in the 1950's. Their love story is well chronicled in Douglas Gresham's book Lenten Lands as well as the Richard Attenborough film Shadowlands. The film featured Anthony Hopkins as C.S. Lewis and Debra Winger as Joy Davidman Gresham.
