“That's a heck of a way to wake up,” I was mumbling.
Bam! I finally hit the little monster's button, silencing him for the day.
Shower time. Ouch! Pain shot through my big toe as it crumpled against the bathroom door frame. Tears filled my eyes while I sat on the “throne”, praising God that I had a home to live in. The throbbing pain finally subsided into a dull ache, that escalated to a number eight level each time that I took a step.
After cutting my face to ribbons with a dull razor, (my wife forgot to buy new ones; her fault, not mine, of course) and brushing my teeth, it was time for a shower.
Stepping into the tub was somewhat delicate, because of my injury. As I shifted my weight to my good foot, a sickening, gut-wrenching feeling exploded in my stomach. My feet shot up into the air as I grabbed onto the shower curtain. Once again, the slow motion effect took over. The shower curtain, gripped tightly in my left hand, was popping off plastic rings as it fell from the curtain rod. I was waiting for my head to bang against the tub, when a more delicate part of my anatomy “cushioned” the brunt of my fall. My toe was once again throbbing and burning from glancing against the faucet, as I fell. I sat there, laughing, crying, and once again praising God that I had I home to live in.
After changing my shirt, for the third time, because of a missing button and a hole, I finally was dressed and ready for breakfast. I cut up my strawberries and bananas into thin, neat, luscious slices. They were evenly distributed over my cornflakes and covered with sugar. When I reached into the refrigerator for the “moo juice”, of course, the jug only held enough to dampen a few flakes. So, I mixed in a little water and ate them anyway, choking a few times on dry flakes, as they went down. I thanked God that I was not dying of hunger.
So, I got into my car for the daily drive to work. No flats, just an almost empty gas tank. My daughter had used my vehicle last evening and had “forgotten” to top off the tank. All the pumps were full at the gas station, so I waited, thanking God that I didn't have to walk to work. As I reached into my pocket for my credit card, no wallet! So, after a return trip home and back to the pump, and a full tank of gas, I thanked God once again for my car.
Traffic was horrible! People were honking and yelling at each other as I sped along at the speed of “ooze”, down the interstate. I tried to call the office, but it always rang busy. At least someone was there! Then the red light came on, lighting up the dashboard and giving me that gut-wrenching feeling again in my stomach.
The waves were breaking on the shore. I could hear their swishing and the sea gulls bickering in the surf. The sun was warm on my skin as I lay there, rocking back and forth in my hammock. As I awoke from my stressful dream, my eyes opened to a beautiful Caribbean sky. Blue sky and blue sea from horizon to horizon. White beaches and a few palm trees here and there. I once again thanked God for my retirement and His beautiful blue tableau.
