"Nonsense," prattled Miss Oak. As if she had some insight into the matter. "My roots have grown in this soil for some 30 years; right here, in the middle of this great forest and I grew from seed.
The oak continued her boasting. "Look at my many branches, they have grown so huge, they are endless and stretch high, up into the night sky."
"Your point......being......." Interjected the same baritone voice. "As if......she knows nothing about the old days" he half muttered to himself.
Miss Oak just continued her happy chatter, never to let Dougie, as she preferred to call him, know she had heard his murmuring.
"Dougie." She proclaimed with great delight. "See how the moon's light is reflecting on and throughout my many branches."
"Yes." He replied in his deepest bass tone voice, trying to appease Miss Oak.
"I'm not blind." He added.
"Well." Explained Miss Oak . "The moonlight is reflecting on my branches in exactly same spot as it did evening last."
"I declare." Miss Oak deliberately chose Dougie's own words. "Darkness has fallen." And quickly argued. "At exactly the same time as last evening and all the evenings before that."
"Humbug." He thundered hoping to intimidate the young Oak.
"Now Miss Oak." The mighty Fir began. "You know, my name is Douglas and I would indulge you to call me by my full name."
"My roots grow deep and are well established in this rich fertile soil. My home has been in this forest for more than 1000 years. And it has come to my attention, that you are not be familiar with the ancient legend of how, we, the Abies species developed."
The Mighty Fir continued. "There is an ancient tale that my great grandfather told me."
"From the beginning, the Almighty One, the Creator, Elohim had designed to plant a garden on the earth." Douglas began his tale. "His eyes gazed far into the future and, just for the fun of it, He allowed a few seeds to escape their destiny. From His hand these seeds fell on a dry and arid place.
"One day." Elohim proclaimed . "These seeds will do me good."
"Once and a bit." Douglas continued. "Elohim would gazed upon the earth to see how His escaped seeds were doing. A little rain came their way and soon the seeds began to sprout and take root in the scant soil. Eventually, these 'wild ones', as Elohim preferred called them, grew into a trees, Abies species of every kind, firs, pines and even your species the Oak all living together in the dry and arid place. Their seeds produced more seeds until the little forest had stretched a great distance almost to the great sea. In this mixture of wild ones, were also the seeds of grapes, figs, almonds and huckleberries."
Then, one day Elohim, Himself came down from the heavens and stood before us. "I planted you all here for a purpose." The Creator explained.
"Please, do me good, protect and nourish my little son, his earthly father, mother and their donkey."
Douglas explained. "For many day, the three travelers and their donkey enjoyed the protection of our forest. They were hidden deep among our many trees and branches, feasting on grapes, figs and huckleberries. Day by day, they peacefully traveled, stopping to rest often, until the day when their donkey led them safely from our forest.
"My great grandfather." Douglas continued. "Told me, Elohim, Himself walked throughout our forest thanking each and every tree and all the grape vines and huckleberry bushes for a job well done. That day, Elohim spoke a special blessing. Forever you will be remembered. Your seeds will scatter far and you will be planted over all the earth. Your offspring will be grown as Christmas Trees and humans will decorated them with lights to celebrate the birth of my son."
