Was sung by a heavenly host
To a humble lot of shepherds
Who needed to hear it the most
Glory to God in the highest
and on earth peace to men
Angels announced his arrival
A Savior, a King, a Friend
Gloria awashed the night
As the sheep tread upon the sod
Beckoning to the shepherds
To seek out the Lamb of God
To Bethlehem, Let us go!
For this child we must see
The Savior, Christ the Lord
Oh could this very thing be?
They hurried off to find the babe
In a manger, he did lie
When their gaze fell upon him
To God they praised and glorified
All spoken in that first carol
The shepherds did now behold
All the things they had heard and seen
All the things they had been told
This song sung to the shepherds
Is a song I’ll forever sing
To glorify my Savior
To proclaim Him as my king
He came for the ordinary shepherd
He came for the ordinary me
Born among men in a manger
So that one day we would be free

Just a slight tweaking of the meter to make it more regular might make this lovely poem even better.
