Cats do it; Birds do it; is it time we nerds do it?
Animals love to tease with this favourite game: There was the time we moved over 300 miles to a new home complete with our cat taking all the precautions that we were advised. Butter on his feet, familiar surroundings for his abode etc. When we arrived there was much to do, unload the furniture and get it all in place, while our five boys were under our feet and demanding attention. Harried and frustrated – That’s only the half.
At last the movers had left and the house had a semblance of order, so we stopped to settle ourselves over a cup of tea. Peace at last, but not for long. The youngest boy came in all alarmed, “Where’s Paw-paw?” Paw-paw was our part Siamese cat, “he’s not in his bed.”
I tried to allay fears, “He’s probably reconnoitring. He’ll be back.”
Time was passing rather rapidly and we had to get dinner. With darkness was fast approaching, all five boys were becoming anxious by now and the centre of our conversation was the missing cat. Suddenly we heard, “Freouw”, Paw-paw refused to “Meouw” just as he would only enter through a door opened for him. We rushed to all three entrances and opened them. No Paw-paw.
We called, just as he refused to meouw , he also would not answer to “puss, puss.” But only to “Freouw” and so all three said, “Freouw”. There was no response so we closed the doors and settled down again to comfort ourselves concerning the cat’s disappearance.
Again, “Freouw”. That was the back door so we opened it, but alas no Paw-paw. We ventured out into the garden to search, each one of the seven in different directions repeating “Freouw; freouw, Paw-paw” as we went. After about a half hour of this procedure we all began to feel quite sheepish as we wondered what our neighbours thought of the new occupants of the house.
Feeling rather silly we returned into the house all determining not to repeat that performance. We settled once more only to hear again, “Freouw” at the back door. The house had been built awkwardly on the block and the back and front door were divided by a small wall up to roof height so we opened both at the same time calling as we did “Freouw – freouw.” Still no cat.
We had walked a few paces out from the doorway and as we turned to return my wife looked up and there on top of the dividing wall was Paw-paw, grinning just like the proverbial Cheshire cat. We had been had by our own cat, were we stupid or what?
It’s not only cats you know. Buddy our budgie had found us after being lost for some time and although he would not stray far from his cage, he loved it when our granddaughter Emily came to visit. I would take him out of his cage and she would fetch a short piece of dowel to point at him. She could not reach him but would point her wand at him and say, “Fly Bird, fly.” He obligingly would fly to another part of the room and Emily would seek him out to repeat the procedure. They often played this game for hours. I’ll never forget the time she thought she had lost him completely.
“Where is that little creature?” She asked over and over again. All the time Buddy was right behind her on a door knob less than a foot away. What a merry laugh when she at last found him and he flew away to hide again.
I am absolutely convinced that seeking and finding one another is more natural than we realise. Even God tells us, “You will seek for me and you will find me when you seek for me with all your heart.” God is not far from any of us for His word of faith is in our hearts and on the tip of our tongue. So that we readily know that if we believe in our hearts that God has raised Jesus from the dead and openly declare Him as our Lord and Saviour, we are saved.
God has sought and found us have we sought to find Him?
It is time to seek the Lord.
