He waits in silence; we watch in silence; and in the hushed twilight, a sweet expectant spirit draws us together. We are not bound to him with familial bonds; we do not share his blood, yet we are family. This is our reunion too, in a smaller, humbler way.
Time is meaningless, yet the significance of the moment is not lost. It spills over and beyond us as we wait in this eternal present for the sun to rise again.
We look to Father, but his eyes are on the gentle curve of hill, on the man who walks in solitude towards this untouched gate. In his wake, the dawn spreads; a wash of honeyed light that diffuses into myriad morning stars, throwing no shadow across his path.
He pauses at the entrance. His work-roughened hands trace the gates’ graceful lines.
“Father,” he says, “I am home.”
Father’s voice is deep and low, a current of love threaded with quiet grief.
“Forgive me, my Son,” He says, “for turning from you in your suffering. There was no other way.”
“No, Abba,” the son replies, extending nail-scarred hands, “There was no greater Love.”
The gates of Heaven sweep wide and, amid a rush of wings and saintly praise, I, a humble cherub, watch the silent holy reunion of the Father and the Son.
