“I’ll do it later.” How many of us have said these words when we think of sending someone an encouraging note or giving them a call? Later comes and we say the same thing; before we know it, its weeks later and we still haven’t sent that note or made that phone call.
This passage tells us to encourage each other every day while we have the opportunity. If we see a brother or sister who is discouraged we need to give them encouragement to cling tightly to God so they won’t get tripped up in sin and become hardened by it. It’s easy for discouragement to work its way into behaviors that our displeasing to God. How many people would stay away from the entrapment of sin if they had people coming along side to build them up in the faith?
