The sound of happy laughter rang out from the corner where Angie and her friends sat. Mario smiled to himself. He was happy when his customers were. He looked at Angie, she was the ringleader!
“I wish all my customers were like you and your friends” he often remarked.
“Oh Mario” she’d say rolling her naughty brown eyes, “we love you. Who couldn’t?”
He wondered where she lived. Always beautifully dressed, she looked after her figure and was just such a lovely person.
Angie knew he was watching them. Sue, Jody and she had been coming to Mario’s coffee shop for ages. His Tiramisu was to die for!
She turned her attention to her friends.
“Where are you and Grant off to this time?” Sue asked with a hint of envy. She would give anything to have Angie’s life. Overseas trips, beautiful home on the river, she wore the latest fashions and had always been “so perfect!”
“I guess Spain or perhaps Italy.”
“My how boring” sighed Jody.
“Well we cannot sit around here all winter. You know I hate the cold and Spain is just too wonderful.”
“Grant certainly is very good to you. Whatever you want he gives you” Sue said.
Angie looked at her watch. “I must run. Grant is having his boss over and I need to do some shopping. Sorry to rush off, I’ll pay Mario as I leave.” Gathering up her belongings she made her way to the till. “Thanks that was good” she said.
Making her way to the car she brushed the tears away. “How stupid you all are” she said to herself. Getting into the car she looked into her mirror.
“Who are you?”
“Can they not see the truth? Have I been living this lie for so long that it has become a reality?”
She cried the whole way home. The person who pulled into the driveway was certainly not the person who had sat laughing with her friends.
“I am so sick of this farce. It has to end!” she sobbed.
Composing herself she walked into her home. The interior though beautifully furnished was as cold as her heart.
She walked through to the bedroom. Kneeling alongside her bed she began to weep.
“Father God please forgive me for living this lie. You and only you know the truth. How can I expose him when he is supposedly such a wonderful person? You know how battered and bruised my spirit is. I can’t take it any longer. This life has been nothing but an empty shell. All I am to Grant is a toy, to be thrown around or dressed up as he pleases. I’m ending it now” she cried.
Getting up she walked into the bathroom. Opening her medicine cupboard she took out the tranquilizers and pills. Emptying them into her hand she made her way through to the bar.
She was busy pouring the brandy into a glass when the doorbell rang. She ignored it. It rang again then she heard the door being tried.
“Go away” she shouted.
”NO ANGIE” screamed Jody as she and Sue raced into the bar.
“How did you get in?”
“The door was unlocked!”
Walking towards her they took her into their arms. “We have suspected for sometime you were in trouble. You may smile but your eyes are sad. We love you Angie, you need to trust us.”
“Oh how can I tell you what a hell life has been. Everything he has given me, the trips overseas, the jewellery, cars and this house are meaningless. All he cares about is himself, his music and the image we as a couple create.”
“Angie you need to decide what you next step will be. You cannot do this to yourself or to your kids. You are such a special person, don’t allow Grant to do this” pleaded Jody.
“You’re right. I can change things. No longer will I live a lie. Thanks for caring, I do appreciate it” she said hugging them.
After they had left she walked through to the bedroom. Smiling to herself she took the suitcase out the cupboard. She felt a tinge of guilt as she packed, not for Grant but for what she was doing to Sue and Jody.
She looked into the mirror. “I hope one day I will like you” she told herself. Picking up the suitcase she walked through the door for one last time!.

Work a bit on dialogue--some of this sounds a bit stilted--not like the way people actually talk in casual conversation.
So true that we often have no idea what is going on in people's lives.
