On holiday in South Devon, England, U.K., we visited Buckfast Abbey, and saw the craftsmanship and dedication that has seen the rebuilding of the Abbey destroyed under Henry V111. Starting with one skilled mason, a few labourers, five pounds and a borrowed horse and cart, the Benedictine Monks rebuilt the Abbey in the early twentieth century.

A Paean of Praising

Architecture and artisan's crafting
Mason and musician's skill
Produce a paean of praising
To the maker and creator of all

Sculptor and stained-glass worker
Carpenter and craftsman in thread
Produce a paean of praising
To Christ their glorious head

Chorister and chaser of metal
Poet, writer of rhythm and rhyme
Produce a paean of praising
Giving thanks to God in their time

Material and gift Godly given
Offered simply in service sublime
Produce a paean of praising
Combining in worship Divine

Creation leads by example
Mountain, sea and star-spangled sky
Produce a paean of praising
From souls to the day that they die

And then with the whole of creation
With angels and the redeemed of the earth
There'll be such a paean of praising
Unto Him for all He is worth.

You drew with your focus on the craftsmen involved in not just the restoration but the original work on this abbey and so many others. I like the phrase, "a paean of praising." It will stick with me. Well done!

You have educated me. I'd never heard the word "paean". I had to look it up. I LIKE the word. Thanks! You have a great title for your entry.

I love how you started this, "Architecture and artisan's crafting Mason and musician's skill
Produce a paean of praising To the maker and creator of all." I like your thought that those gifted with artisty can praise the creator by using their talents.
