“What about the soul?”
This question threw him off slightly. When he regained his composure, he answered stiffly, “the soul is not an actual, physical organ. In fact, it does not even exist, simply a myth produced by the Aztecs in-”
“That’s not what the Bible says,” she interrupted once again. “The Bible says that the soul is-”
“This is a public school, Miss Dean. I realize that such a transition from a private school can cause some confusion, but here we do not go by what the Bible says. It is not scientifically proven, but merely a book of fiction.”
“That’s not true!”
“Go to the office!”
With a huff, she jumped out of her chair, making sure to let it bang and rock against the floor, disrupting the entire class. With a chin held high, she snatched up her pocket Bible and carried it with the rest of her books in perfect viewing access, her point made clear. When her parents came to pick her up, she was in a worse tizzy than when she left the classroom only minutes before.
“Honey, some people don’t believe that the Bible is true,” her mother was telling her.
“Why?”
“Because there’s nothing to prove that it is true. At least nothing that they’ll accept to be true at any rate.”
“Because they can’t see it?”
“Yes. That’s one reason. They can’t see God, therefore they don’t believe in him.”
“So, they’re a bunch of Thomas’s?”
“Exactly. But we must not be put down by them. Our goal is to help them see without using their eyes.”
“How do we do that?”
“I don’t know…”
“Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed’.” (John 20:29)
