“ We wish we died like others who fell dead before the Lord!”
“Why on earth did you bring us out of Egypt to this terrible place?
“ No corn or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And no water to drink!”
Could not contain his frustrations and anger any longer, he struck the rock twice with the staff after screaming at them.
“ You rebels, must we bring you water from this rock?”
Moses must have felt vindicated to see water flowing from the rock. Perhaps he even heaved a sigh of relief, very glad that he blew off steam just now.
It must have come as an anticlimax to what he felt.
Trembled from head to foot, he received the Lord’s rebuke.
“Because you didn’t trust Me enough to honor Me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”
I believe the clamor must have played havoc with Moses's composure, and caused him to ignore the Lord’s specification. In sidestepping His direction, Moses failed to honor God as holy, sacred, different and distinct, before the Israelites. He did not obey God so he did not really trust Him. Faith and obedience go hand in hand, am I right? Almost without fail, I recoil at my reading of Matthew 7: 21-23. Have I been doing His will or merely doing things in His name?
Are not these things written for my learning? Moses’ mistakes can be my mistakes. Whatever the Israelites were facing can be mine too. There was nothing novel about their water problem. In fact, the Lord provided for them on the previous occasion. Surely, the incident offers us valuable lessons for trials and temptations in my life journey. I rejoice that my needs are met through the Lord Jesus Christ, the Captain of our life.
Thank You Father, I don’t have to walk my life journey alone. You have already provided the Lord Jesus to guide and lead me in times of peace and in the realm of pain, in dark times but also in uninspiring and routine times.
