Workers then build supports for the young vines to spread their tendrils and fasten to the wires. Without the vine, there would be no branches. Without the branches, there would be no vine. Inside the vine resides survival, vitality and growth.
Jesus said in John 15:1-5 that He is the true vine and His Father is the one who cares for the branches to make them fruitful. He said that every branch must abide in Him because it cannot bear fruit apart from the vine. He says, “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” The relationship is intricate and intimate.
God took His Son, the tender shoot, and placed Him in the sinful ground. He does the will of His Father. He bears much fruit in His earthly life, and then is crushed just like the grape to make new wine and new life in Him. His crushing brought us salvation. Now, as believers we are grafted into His very life to receive the sustenance we need to produce more fruit and live in Him. We are the branches of the true vine. Our existence demands we live in Him. The vine is the vessel to get the much needed nutrients to the branches and the plant. Without the nutrients, the plant will die and never mature or produce fruit.
Am I a fruitful branch? Am I self-centered in meeting my needs in the vine? Or am I abiding in the vine? There is only life in the tender shoot of the vine!
