I once heard a tale of two monks who, walking a path to a river, came upon a woman who was distressed because she could not cross the turbulent waters. Now, it was against the rule of the monks' order to touch a woman, so the first monk was alarmed when the second one, without hesitation, hoisted the woman on his shoulder, carried her across the river, and set her safely down on the other side. The two monks walked on in silence for an hour before the first one finally spoke. "Brother, my soul is heavily burdened, so I must ask. You know it is against our rule to touch a woman, yet you carried that woman across the river."

"Yes," replied the second one. "And then I put her down. It appears that you are still carrying her."

This second monk's reply reminds me that I may at times carry interior heaviness or baggage that could, with a good puff of intentional release, be let go. Irritation at an inconvenience, impatience, anger after a perceived slight, worry over things I can do nothing about, judgements about others, even negative self-judgements.

What keeps me awake at night? What do I brood over? What do I harbor in my heart that troubles the waters of my imagination and concern, robbing me of interior peace? What am I carrying that the Lord might invite me to put down, to release? Maybe it is time to identify those things, and give them a good puff out and away. I'll do it. Lord. Help me. Here goes ...

Ohoooooo ...................
Whhhhhh ....................
Huuuuuu .....................
Uhhhhhh .....................
Mmmmm .....................
Thank you, Lord, for hearing and answering my prayers.
Amen.
