On God they did rely,
They followed Joshua's commands,
On Canaan they did spy.
Who knew God used a prostitute,
For Rahab was her name,
Two spies to Jericho were sent
To see the land they claimed.
The Canaanites were fearful,
They'd heard of Israel's deeds,
“Bring out the men who came to you,”
The angered king decreed.
But Rahab hid these men of God,
Defied the angry mob,
For in her heart of hearts she knew
God-given was this job.
Deceitfully she sent the mob
Pursuing out of town,
Two spies were lying on her roof
As dusk was closing down.
“I know the Lord has given you
The land in which I live.
Please save my family, those I love,
Assistance I will give.
I know the Lord is with you,
We've heard how God has blessed,
For miracles he's wrought for you,"
The spies Rahab addressed.
"Those forty years you traveled
The manna fell like dew,
And for the thirsty on this trip
From rocks, He water drew.
We've even heard that quail was sent,
Your God provided meat.
Your clothing lasted forty years,
The shoes upon your feet.
Not once but twice by rivers blocked,
Your God provides dry ground.
At His command a path was formed,
His people never drowned.
So, yes, we've heard God's exploits,
We've heard what God can do,
Our hearts have melted with our fear,
We live in dread of you.”
“Your safety we will swear this day,
Our secret you must keep,
And then a scarlet cord let down
This wall that is so steep.”
The spies then hastened on their way,
Through Rahab they were saved.
And Rahab, though a prostitute,
In Scriptures name engraved.
This scarlet cord, a symbol
Of future scarlet blood,
This sacrifice of saving grace,
The Savior's love would flood.
The ordinary God will use,
Yes, sinners saved by grace,
This One who loved us, everyone,
Who died to take our place.
Who knew that Rahab, blessed by God,
Would one day lead to Christ.
She's in the "bloodline" of our Lord,
God blessed this secret tryst.
