The month of love brings rich brown candies given in red foil hearts, roses by the dozens, and diamonds in white ice. Love can be expensive! It’s worth the price. We bury the knowledge that we are loved deep in our hearts as we march into the wearing of the green.
Green with envy, green around the gills? No, green to keep me from getting pinched. Ouch! Green clovers…I’ll take the 4-leaf type, thank you very much. No green beer for me. Just a day of silly fun before the April fools come out.
April waters the world in preparation; blue droplets on a dull grey canvas. Look! Right up next to the house. See it? There, the tiny patch of green grass. There’s something else. The first spears of my jonquils have fought their way through the rain-softened soil. Spring at last!
May flowers burst forth after April showers. The world’s greatest color show explodes. Red tulips, yellow jonquils, paper white narcissus, pink hyacinths to feed my soul. The color of May sure smells good.
The luscious scents get replaced with bored kids that must be shooed outside to enjoy the green grass of June. It won’t last, I remind them. They roll their eyes and head off to climb leaf-covered trees to while away their summer days.
The star-spangled celebration of July bursts forth quickly. Red, white, and blue drapes our world as we feast on ripe red watermelon and heavily garnished hot dogs. Our bellies are full enough to take us into the scorching August heat.
Record high temperatures. August grass is…crunchy yellow; except for the patch in the back yard around the kids’ blow-up pool. I sacrifice the water for the rest of the lawn so they may fill their pool each day. Brightly colored swimsuits on laughing children brings a smile to my face.
September ushers in more rain and our green returns to be trod upon by backpack laden kids off to meet the school bus. I sigh. Summer colors always fade away too quickly.
I close the door, turn around, and bump into October orange. A trip to the pumpkin patch, a bale of hay, fall colored mums. Satisfied with our décor, I realize with glee that the addition of our old brown turkey will carry us into November.
The house if full. The sounds of a festive November gathering color our world as we feast. I look around, thankful for my family and the hue they bring to my life. Like a box of crayons, each one is unique.
December dawns before the colors of November have had a chance to fade away. Green and red, spreading cheer as they wrap the world up in a conspiracy of love. Smiling faces, giving hearts, thinking of others, helping those less fortunate…this must truly be the way our Father intended us to live.
In the season of giving, it’s easy to see that my life is truly filled with color. Though the greatest gift I’ve ever received was not wrapped in bright paper or tied with a pretty ribbon and placed beneath a tree. It was the gift of God’s Son; the gift that allows me to march through life enjoying all its colors. That gift, so precious, would clearly paint my path for all eternity.
