The sweetness of life comes wrapped in sour, bitter moments. It’s a matter of taking the good with the bad. This makes me think of the parable of the weeds in Matthew 13:24-30. If the farmer were to pull up the weeds growing amidst the wheat, he would end up removing good growth along with the bad.
Knowledge and patience are the virtues that come from loving the sweet moments while tolerating the sour parts of life. Only when it was time to harvest did the farmer separate the wheat from the weeds. This allowed him to have the greatest amount of yield from his harvesting efforts. There is much to be learned from his wisdom.
So many times I want the bad stuff in life to hurry on its way yet if I ask God for patience to tolerate the sour times there are lessons to be learned. When the student is ready, the teacher appears. Such as the times when feeling as if I am a million miles away from God. I came to realize that this distance is by my own doing and providential at the same time. It’s taken a few years to get the lesson which is, it is through the darkness that God keeps me close to him. Just goes to prove that God will do or use anything to keep us close to him.
According to studies, dark chocolate is actually good for us. I remember the first time trying it - all I could taste was the bitterness. It certainly did not taste nearly as sweet and delectable as milk chocolate and it was not a delightful moment for me. Years later, I have come to realize that dark chocolate is not all that bad. In fact, there are some treats where the dark chocolate actually provides character and flavor.
Where my best friend lives in Florida is a confectionary specializing in chocolate covered delectable treats. During a trip to visit my friend we did a taste test to decide which items to buy. The milk chocolate covered pretzels were tasty yet when I tried the dark chocolate covered pretzels, the taste buds in my mouth began salivating. This was a defining moment for me because until our taste test, I assumed, based on my first impression that dark chocolate was not for me. My perspective has since changed.
Life is full of bittersweet moments. I am currently in a situation that is forcing me to face and accept the bitter with the sweet. I am grateful for answers that have put me on the path for healing however there are side effects that are part of this process. At this point, I chose to tolerate the bitter side effects to embrace the sweetness of improved vision. For this improvement alone, I am grateful.
