“I saw him too,” James states, almost in tears.
“My children, we need to go now and meet with the others. They’re expecting us.”
Silence hangs in the air; brothers glance at each other and hang their heads.
“Come, we must go,” turning to leave, Mother catches their expressions. James is the only one who seems excited.
“Sons, what is wrong?”
Looking at each one, attempting to make eye contact, “Well…?”
Joses, softly, almost inaudibly, “Mother, you know.”
Seconds pass. “I understand but I know he loves you and wants you all to be with him.”
Frozen, waiting for someone to speak or move, finally Simon asks, “How can he? After the way we treated him?” Looking down, tears flowing, “We went along with the others. Even calling him names behind his back.” Through the sobs Mother hears him say, “Bastard” and he falls to his knees crying. As the room erupts in wailing, the others turn their heads, tears flowing, each softly repeating something they too had said about or to him.
Mother moving towards Simon to comfort him, yet realizes all her sons and daughters need the same, “Oh, my children…!” A moan is heard and they rush to her, clasping her. Tears, tears, tears.
“He was so right when he said, ‘Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor’.”* But he is honored now. He loves you, has forgiven you, and wants you to follow him.”
“It’s true. He accepted me without reservation. I felt totally loved. He asked me to have you come, each of you, by name,” James is emphatic.
James and Mother are pleading with their eyes, Come! Please!
Her youngest son, Judas, starts to look at his brethren but instead, with head bowed, moves towards the door. A rush of feet beat him to the door. Stopping, they all turn to look at Mother and James, “Well?”
“Well, let’s get to the upper room!” Mother’s tears are still flowing but now they are tears of joy. James puts his arm around her shoulder. She starts humming a hymn and all join in the praise song with voices loud and clear.
