As I came trudging up the rocky lane, it didn’t matter what kind of day I had . The school bully had picked on and humiliated me once again. There was always countless ways to torment someone labeled a “geek.” I always knew I could count on Warrior (my family pet) to come bounding up, with unconditional love, ready to lick whatever surface
he could reach first, and somehow it always helped me to feel better.
After a quick snack, we were off to explore the woods. We could always find new adventures awaiting us. We let our imaginations take us on many wonderful forays into the unknown. We could be pirates on a ship, down by the stream, or outlaws while running through the woods. Eventually, we always had to come back to reality, so I could take care of my responsibilities. They included taking care of my pet , taking out the trash, and doing my homework.
It always amazes me how much fuller life seems when you have a pet. On Saturday, dad and I took Warrior with us on a fishing trip. Warrior seemed to sense the need to be quiet as we baited our hooks and waited anxiously to see who would get the first bite.
As it turned out, I was the lucky one . I caught a 2 lb. catfish and reeled it in carefully.
Dad caught several and so did I, so we built a campfire on shore and cooked our supper.
While we were waiting, I played fetch with warrior. Then it was time to load up and head home, what a great day!
The next day when I came in from school, Mom seemed upset, then I found out grandpa had a stroke. Well, I had to get away for a while and think on the situation to understand my feelings. As usual, Warrior was there beside me, when I went to my favorite spot to sort things out. Mom was pretty worried so grandpa must be pretty sick.
Warrior layed there with his head on his paws whimpering because he could sense my distress. Dad always said we should pray when something was troubling us, so I bowed my head and prayed a heartfelt prayer for my grandpa’s recovery.
The next week, my family had to make a trip to check on my grandpa. In all the commotion of packing and loading the car, somehow Warrior was left outside. I shudder to think what life would be like if something had happened to Warrior. He was my constant shadow, my faithful companion. We were only gone for 2 days but when we pulled up Warrior rushed up to greet us. That’s when I realized what must have happened. I felt so bad. After all he was my responsibility and yet he still came out to greet us once again with that unconditional love only a family pet could know.
