My first introduction to sewing was during the depression when I was in elementary school. My Mom made the dresses I wore to school - sometimes they were made from bags that chicken feed came in. Some were pretty prints, some were solid with maybe a border and my grandmother made kitchen curtains out of them.
Then when I was in high school my first Home Economics class included making a skirt. My teacher gave me an A and I remember her commenting on my choice of material and how the thread matched so well. Needles to say, I was proud of what I had done.
Then came the years when I didn’t think about doing any sewing at all. It was much more fun to go shopping and buy things already made. It was especially easy since I was working in a large department store and got a nice discount.
After I got married, and later had a little boy, my grandmother wanted to get rid of her pedal Singer sewing machine. I bought it for $20.00. She even gave me some of Grandpa’s pants and said I could use the good part of the legs to make my Tom some pants, both long and short. I did make some plain and some a little more dressy. My husband was in school so making Tom’s clothes was a big help. Tom even liked to watch me pedal the machine. Two boys later, it seemed easier to pay Sears and J.C. Penney for boy’s clothes.
At some point, I traded in the Singer pedal machine for an electric one and made a few clothes for myself but doing so was not a real priority for me. I took a class to learn to sew knits and, even though it seemed so easy, I found shopping in stores was more my style. Sewing is one of the arts I wish I had pursued more. It can be creative, practical and fulfilling.
These days I live in an independent retirement center and what sewing I do - like hemming, etc. I take to the S & B Club once a month. In case you are not familiar with the S & B Club, it stands for sew and bitch. However, for most of us who go it is a time to share talents and helpful hints about our experiences. Most of all we like to be sensitive to each other’s needs in the autumn of our lives.
