I met John Briel III a few years ago at church. Every Sunday he met my family at the door, with a warm smile and a firm handshake. He was a real gentleman, and lived his life for the Lord. (He kind of resembled Colonal Sanders.)
Like many of us, he didn’t always believe that Jesus Christ was our Savior, but one day he realized there was something missing in his life.
He wanted everybody he met to know the Lord also. Every morning he would go to a local restaurant in town, and have breakfast. He had a lot of friends there. He shared his stories of his young adult life as a dirt track racer. He raced under the name “Johnnie Johnson.” His Mother wouldn’t allow him to race on Sunday, so he took that name so she wouldn’t see his name in the paper. One day he had an accident. He lost control of his car, and was headed towards the grandstand. Somehow he managed to swerve, and instead hit a light pole. He ended up losing a leg, but nobody else got hurt.
He is enshrined in the Michigan racing hall of fame. A few years ago John had a heart attack and he passed away shortly thereafter.
Just before his funeral, I found out he had been a prisoner of war. He got captured during the Battle of the Bulge, in World War Two. He never mentioned this to me. All he talked about was his love of the Lord, and his racing days. At the funeral, the room was filled with his family, the people that he knew from the restaurant, friends from his racing days, and all his friends from church. He was truly a blessed man, and so were we for knowing him.
FAITHFUL SON
You’ve brought an old friend to Heaven
What a glorious day this must be
The streets of gold shine brighter
The stars twinkle with glee
He’ll walk with the Mighty Savior
Who will thank him for all he’s done
“You’ve lead many to my kingdom
You’ve been such a faithful son”
“All you see that surrounds you
I’ve prepared for the pure of heart”
“I’m proud of all you’ve accomplished
I knew you’d be here from the start”
“Go enjoy your brand new body
You’ve been made whole again”
“You can run in a field of grass
Do whatever you want my friend”
“I’ve got just one more assignment
I’ved saved especially for you”
“Will you stand inside my gate
And greet all those that pass through?”
John 3:15
SALVATION
When You take our friend to Heaven
I know he’ll feel right at home
He’ll worry about His dear wife
I know she won’t be alone
Her friends and family love her
She’s always a phone call away
She’ll always have her memories
They’ll be sure to fill her day
She knows he’s in a better place
But sadness fills her heart
And then she will remember
Salvation’s the best part
DEAR FATHER
You are our Lord and Savior
The ruler of all things
We cherish all Your teachings
And the wisdom that they bring
We love the peace You’ve brought us
Just knowing that we’re Yours
The Holy Spirit came to us
And opened many doors
We give thanks for all Your blessings
That shelter us from harm
We thank You most dear Father
For holding us in Your arms
