That word never crossed his lips.
He only knew he was walking
a path that was not his.
He followed the footsteps before him
that led him to duty and grace,
the duty to take care of others,
the grace to finish the race.
Those footsteps led him to dangers,
foes within and without.
He tasted the fire of anger,
the ice of fear and doubt.
Another had gone before him
now distanced by decades in time
but the footsteps remained to be followed,
tradition and faith refined.
Laying aside selfish notions
he pushed ahead step by step,
choosing to follow the pathway
of sacrifice, pride, and respect.
He stumbled at times and grew weary.
Temptation to stray sometimes won,
but the deeper call of the footprints
always brought him home.
Reaching the end of his journey
he looked into the face
of the one who had left behind footprints
to guide every step, every pace.
He never felt like a hero.
The thought never crossed his mind,
but now I walk in his footprints
where integrity's pathway I find.
