Illness
Formaldehyde: do you know what that is? It’s used in embalming. It’s one of the three poisons in artificial sweeteners, but it’s not written on the Federal Drug Authority (FDA) harmful effects list. What are we talking about here – Equal, Sween’N Low, NutraSweet, Sunett, Splenda, Sugar Twin and maybe a few others I may have missed on this list. I will explain as this story unfolds.
I had heard all the news reports that artificial sweeteners would make me fat.
“That’s a lot of baloney,” I thought to myself.
What the report did not include is how the scientific information arrived at these conclusions. The FDA approved all the artificial sweeteners didn’t they? The authorities said artificial sweeteners were safe. Would our government lie to us? I discovered artificial sweeteners are chemical poisons.
For the past 40 years, I have awakened usually 3 to 4 times a night, sometimes more. I had symptoms, but I thought that was due to what I was doing to myself, not what I happened to be eating. Using my personal experience, I will share this nightmare. I figured this was caused by all the stress in my life. I became tired by 4:30 p.m. every day and I explained that as a result of a busy day.
In the course of my research, I discovered Phenylalanine (aspartame) is an isolate neurotoxin (a substance that is poisonous to nerve tissue*1) which goes directly to the brain depleting serotonin. Serotonin is necessary for sleep.
After developing fluid retention, I said, “That happens sometimes!” I was pregnant five times and some swelling occurs during pregnancy. I discovered artificial sweeteners can cause an allergic reaction creating edema/water retention in body tissue. I’ve had this problem for over 45 years.
My daughter, in Tennessee is one smart cookie. She always said, “Read the box, Mom!”
I did read the box - once in awhile. This past month, we talked on the phone and something was mentioned about food additives. This conversation jogged my memory of a book I purchased back in 2006 called, “Natural Cures, ‘They Don’t Want You to Know About,’” by Kevin Trudeau. Two years ago, I had printed out as much information (“Horror stories/aspartame”) as I could find from the Internet and filed it away in this book.
It was the artificial sweeteners keeping me awake at night. I stopped eating and drinking everything containing aspartame. The amazing part of this story is that I began sleeping through the night; it was almost like a miracle. It was as though a fog lifted from my brain. I could not believe I had been so stupid.
Next, I returned the opened pack of 24 cans of Diet Cokes to Safeway and asked for a refund. I returned the opened box of NutraTaste to Weis grocery store. If they argued with me I was ready to do battle with my information. I began using 2 teaspoons of raw sugar in my decaf coffee, but my brain did not recognize the sweetness!
I’m still researching why this has happened. I’m returning my Weight Watchers Chocolate Smoothie because it has sucralose and acesulfame-K in it. No ingredients on the box informed me that these are two chemicals part of the artificial sweetener group. I will explain further.
I had noticed I was always hungry after eating a good meal. I thought it was my fault and blamed myself for a lack of self-control. I was soon to discover more side effects of aspartame - after eating a significant amount of carbohydrates, the serotonin levels are supposed to elevate in the brain, which then causes a relaxed feeling after a meal.
Using an artificial sweetener with a meal causes the brain to “cease production of serotonin,” resulting in the fact that the feeling of having had “enough” food never happens. I ate many different products containing aspartame and the cycle continued. I was always thirsty and most of the time hungry. Controlling my weight was always a challenge.
What’s this I said earlier about “formaldehyde?” Methanol in aspartame breaks down into formaldehyde. This poison is known to cause damage to the nervous system and immune system and is the same chemical compound of venom in insect stings. This story gets more frightening.
Digesting aspartame breaks down in the body into 3 chemicals; a mixture of 40% aspartic acid (linked to brain disorders), 50% phenylketonurics (another spelling is - phenylalanine) which decreases serotonin, and 10% methanol (known as wood alcohol, a poison).
The average human body temperature is 98.6 F. Aspartame turns into methanol and formaldehyde when heated. Artificial sweeteners break down at a temperature of 86-Fahrenheit and ends up in your body as formaldehyde. This statement shocked me into awareness. If you are using an artificial sweetener, you are poisoning yourself. The question now is why was this sweetener approved by the FDA in the first place? I will answer this question later.
As a chronic dieter, I needed the sweet taste and used sweeteners to excess, sometimes 15 packs a day. It’s a miracle I’m still alive. I rationalized to myself they were small packs - at least I was not using sugar. I was doing something good for myself, or so I thought.
For years, my favorite choice was that pink package. I had headaches and was tired more than usual. Here’s the odd part, I could not sweat. My face always turned bright red when I was hot. I had this condition for years. I believe this product was clogging my sweat glands.
A doctor said I had loss of potassium and that I needed to take a supplement, which I did. He never asked what I was eating or drinking or made any reference to an artificial sweetener and I never thought to mention it. The damage had been done. I could not perspire properly. This went on for years and by the grace of God, I was finally healed of this particular problem.
Of course, there was the arthritis in both my knees and the constant pain in my left hip, which I said to myself, was caused
from all the jogging and marathon running. I was also experiencing some hair loss. Hey, that happens when you reach a certain age, doesn’t it? I developed tendonitis in both hands working at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. I explained that away as too much typing.
I began searching the Internet as though my life depended on it. Aspartame was not approved until 1981. How many people know that our FDA refused to approve it? I soon discovered it’s a “money thing.” It had big business written all over it. We know who they are!
When President Ronald Regan (a friend of Searle Company, owner of aspartame) took office, he fired the FDA Commissioner who would not approve aspartame. Regan then appointed Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes and a board were formed to investigate the use of aspartame.
The board said, “DO NOT APPROVE ASPARTAME.”
Dr. Hayes overruled his own board and aspartame was approved. Now tell me, why do you think that happened? Are we talking big bucks here? Soon after Dr. Hayes left the FDA, the Searle Firm hired him at $1,000 a day.
I began reading the boxes in my cupboard that said, “Sugar Free.” “That’s got to be safe,” I thought to myself. What does that really mean? Turn the box over. Contains: Phenylketonurics, another spelling for this word is phenylalanine. How would the consumer know Phenylketonurics is aspartame?
It was necessary for me to use a magnifying glass to read the ingredients on the package of Swiss Miss hot chocolate drink - “No Sugar Added.” It contained a list I could not pronounce. I looked every word up on the Internet. That’s where I found out that sucralose is part of the artificial sweetener group.
I will explain further. Slim Fast contains aspartame, acesufame potassium, and acesulfame-K which contain the carcinogen methylene chloride. My Swiss Miss “sugar free,” contains sucralose, acesulfame potassium and phenylketonurics. The General Foods Mocha, “sugar free” contains aspartame and acesulfame potassium and phenylketonurics. How many people know what these words mean? They are all poison.
I just became aware from the support group on Yahoo that the newest poison is called “Neotame.” If this word is listed in the ingredients, you don’t want to use the product.
Guess what sucralose is? It’s made when sugar is treated with trityl chloride and 11 other chemicals. “Treated” is the key word here. The misconception is that it is made from sugar and the Splenda web site states it has a structure like sugar, but it’s not natural.
The word sucrose is table sugar and sucralose sound almost the same, so it is confusing. The proper name is trichlorogalactosucrose but the FDA allows them to use sucralose. The deception continues.
Here’s a frightening bit of information I found during my extensive research. The troops of Desert Storm were treated to drinks containing aspartame, which sat in the Saudi Arabian sun. Guess what happened? The drinks heated up in the sun and turned to poison. Many returned home with the disorders of those who had formaldehyde poisoning. It gets worse.
Folks using artificial sweeteners and related products as noted in some studies will cause autism. Years ago there were only 1 to 1,500 babies born with autism. Now the staggering figure is 1 to every 500. Greed is poisoning our people.
On June 27, 1996, without informing the public, the FDA removed all restrictions from aspartame allowing it to be used in everything. Isn’t it amazing how much we trust our government? It is sometimes written on the box - Contains: Phenylketonurics. It should say - WARNING: Danger to your health; contains formaldehyde.
All harmful chemicals and their effects should be listed clearly with an explanation, so the consumer can understand the meaning. My personal recommendation - all products containing these poisons should be pulled from the shelves in the stores and force-fed to all the FDA people who approved them!
