But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved. Eph. 2:4-5
It’s a wonderful thing to know that we can be made fully alive because of the sacrifice Jesus made on the Cross for us. Ephesians 2:1 says we were dead in our transgressions. We may not have realized it at the time, but we were the walking dead.
My husband is a deer hunter and sometimes when he shoots a deer, it will continue to run. They call that a “dead deer running.” The deer doesn't even realize it, but it’s about to hit the ground at any moment.
It’s the same with us before we come to Christ. We don't realize just how lifeless we truly are, but we're dead in our transgressions. We're the walking dead. There’s no life, no joy, and the happiness we may seem to have is only superficial. It’s a façade. It’s a not a genuine happiness that only comes from the Holy Spirit.
All of us lived like that at one time, constantly doing our best to gratify every craving of the sinful nature following after its evil desires and sensual thoughts. Some of us became slaves to sin. (Eph. 2:3; Rom. 6:6) Christ died that we can be made fully alive with Him and He did that even while we were still sinners.
But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
It’s a mystery how the walking dead can somehow be made alive, but it can be accomplished because of the miracle of salvation taking place and when the blood of Jesus washes over the sinful soul. At that very moment, a transformation takes place and the old man is put to death and a new creation emerges. (2 Cor. 5:17) Within the human mind it may seem impossible how it all comes about, but we can accept it by faith that Christ has come into our hearts. We can welcome Him in and begin a new life all because of the saving blood of Jesus Christ. Once we receive Christ, we become dead to sin, but alive unto God in Christ Jesus.
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Christ Jesus. Rom. 6:11
Some believe even though they receive Christ as their Savior, they can continue in the same sins that had them bound in the first place. Some believe they can continue to carry on the same ungodly conversations they always had telling the same off-color jokes and foul language, but that is far from the truth. We’re to “turn away” from godless chatter. (1 Tim. 6:20)
Sin is the one thing that will separate us from God. It will drive a wedge between us because He is a holy God. (Is. 59:2; Col. 1:21)
To be made fully alive in Christ Jesus, we must throw off everything that hinders and away from the sin that so easily entangles us. (Heb. 12:1) We will never grow in our experience with God the Father if we continue in it. We must throw it off! We must turn from all unrighteousness if we are to become like Jesus Christ. Then, we will become great ambassadors for Jesus Christ like He desires us to be. We will shine forth fully alive in God through Jesus Christ. We will no longer have to worry about being the walking dead because we will be made fully alive in Christ.
Prayer:
Father, thank you that we can be made fully alive unto you through Christ Jesus. Thank you for all you've done for us. Thank you for the old rugged Cross. Thank you for the blood that was shed for us when Jesus died. Thank you that we can be made new because of the Cross. We honor you for allowing your Son to go to the Cross so that we can have life eternal and have life in abundance now. We can have happiness and joy that will come from the Spirit of the Living God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
