Men
“Next week, we will play Angel-Mortal game,” Mr. Smith announced to his class grinning. They listened with anticipation. “Today, each of you will pick one paper with a name on it from this box. That person will be your mortal and you will be his angel. Being “angels”, you will secretly and creatively start blessing your mortals from Monday till Friday afternoon. You should spend not more than 4 dollars.” he continued.
Wednesday came and Jack watched his classmates open their gifts. Tony got a box of choco bars. Pam got a bouquet of wild flowers. Hillary was serenaded by her angel’s band. Ben got a bookmark with Psalm 23 written on it. Few others didn’t get anything.
“Gee, I’m glad. I’m not alone.” Jack said quietly to himself.
“Hey, Jack! What have you got?” Yelled Tony sitting on the back row.
“Umm…A note… saying, “Go and get half of Tony’s chocobar!”” Jack yelled back to Tony. “Naah! I got nothing. Looks like my angel’s wings got stuck in between branches somewhere.” Tony chocked.
The bell rung and all raced to the door. Jack was almost knocked down the floor by the ‘stampede’.
“Man, our High School graduation is coming near and we are still behaving like preschoolers!” Jack muttered. Feeling down, he walked towards his locker and found a yellow paper stuck on the door of his locker.
“The list of spiritual gifts are found in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, Ephesians 4:7-13 and Romans 12:3-8. Have a nice day… your angel.” Jack finished reading and then grinned sheepishly as if he knew who had done it.
“Looks like you’ve got a very spiritual angel, Jack.” Tony suddenly said who had been standing behind him.
“Sure. He is.” Jack quipped over his shoulders; quickly turned around; snatched the half eaten chocobar off Tony’s hand; and gobbled it up.
“Hey, easy. Take this extra one for your midnight snack.” Tony said and shoved it into Jack’s pocket.
“Would you like to attend our Bible Study this evening? We’ll, have dinner afterwards.” Tony urged Jack. Without hesitation, Jack agreed and off they went on Tony’s bike.
“Tonight, we are going to talk about Spiritual Gifts.” Chris, the preacher said. There were about 10 people gathered in the living room. During the Bible Study, Jack painstakingly thumbed through his Bible. His face reflected a hungry soul. After the Bible Study, Chris handed out questionnaires on “Discovering Your Gifts”.
Then came Wednesday. Tony was sick at home.
Chris began by saying, “The gifts of the Spirit enable us to do what God has called us to do. As 2 Peter 1:3 says, "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness."
“Are you saying that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are part of the "everything we need" to fulfill His purposes for our lives?” Jack asked.
“Exactly!” Chris answered. And then asked everyone to share his new found spiritual gifts. “Jack, would you like to share yours?”
Jack said, “Well, I think, I have the Gift of Wisdom. And I need more explanation”
“Okay,” Chris said, “The Gift of Wisdom provides us with God's view of things on reality that cuts through events. It enables us to feel His divine presence and action at work, even in tragic and painful situations.”
“Can I add to that, Sir?” Jack’s classmate Ben said to Chris.
“Go ahead.” Chris obliged.
Ben continued, “The gift of the word of wisdom is the application of knowledge that God gives you (I Corinthians 2:6-7). This type of wisdom is a gift that can’t be gained through study or experience and no one should try to replace them.”
“Very well said! You just nailed it in right here in our heads, Ben.” Chris affirmed him then said to the group, “The gift of the word of wisdom is seeing life from God's perspective. As you exercise this gift, you will begin to develop a fear of the Lord. This is the "beginning of wisdom" according to Proverbs 1:7. Isn’t that amazing?”
While everyone was praying for Jack, he saw faces of his classmates crying out for help. He could tell exactly what was going on with their lives. And He got the answers for them.
Friday came. Laughter filled the classroom every time an angel reveals his identity to his mortal. Jack never knew that Tony was his angel till then.
