A Sudden Good Break!
How is Jesus’ physical presence at a healing any different than being far away? A healing it is, either way. Does it take a different kind of faith, whether Jesus is present or in the Spirit? Of course, if we could only see Jesus, touch the hem of His robe, would we then have a great faith for our healing? I have had intense, unrelenting headaches for years now, but not twelve years. A woman was bleeding for twelve years, bleeding without the comforts of our hygiene products, no less, being shunned by the public because she was impure, for twelve long years. She spent all the money she had running from doctor to doctor. No one was able to help. After twelve years, I wonder who took her on these quests, family? friends? She most probably fought the battle on her own for most of those years -- alone in her plight, never giving up hope. She had just returned from her last appointment and the news was not good. The bleeding was much worse, how much can a woman take? Not only was it the flow but also the isolation, such loneliness. Someone must have cared enough about this woman to tell her about Jesus or maybe she heard Him speak as she was coming back from this disappointing doctor’s visit. She found out that Jesus healed the sick. “If I can only catch up with Him but look at all these people… people hurting, needing healing, people much younger than me that have their whole lives ahead of them. In John 5:28 she said, “If I just touch His clothes. I will be healed.” What faith! After so many disappointments she still reached out for an answer because she had hope. It was not an easy thing to get through the crowd. The only reason she made any headway was when people recognized her as unclean and cleared the way. She pressed on, shoved back and forth, backwards, pushed forward a few steps, knocked flat on her face. She was so close to her answer.
There He is. She caught a glimpse of Him. A sudden burst of inspiration came to her as she saw an opportunity arise to help her get to Jesus. She could use her last bit of energy, take off running and lunge at Him. She surprised the crowd, this old, unclean woman, running and taking a leap at the back of Jesus. She missed knocking Him down with her body but she did manage to touch His robe. “Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.” (Mark 5:29) Just a touch from the garment that clothed Jesus was all it took for this woman’s healing after years of searching for an answer because her faith was stirred to a great depth. If she really did lunge, which is only my imagination as I try to bring this woman to life, she lunged in great faith, having a great faith potential. Many others bumped against Jesus and had no healing. She did not fall to her knees in the middle of the crowd and beg for an audience with Jesus. She persevered until she finally realized her goal – a great healing from the Master!
How many times have I been close to my answer and given up too quickly? Have you given up on ever being well? Lord, grow our faith as we use this unnamed woman from the Bible as our example! Proverbs 13:12 from the Message says this, “Unrelenting disappointment leaves you heartsick but a sudden good break can turn life around.” This woman left each appointment with her earthly doctors broken and disappointed, how could she not? But as she kept seeking an answer, her sudden good break did turn her life around!
