Devotionals
The United States Secret Service exists for two reasons: to investigate fraud and forgery and to protect our nation’s leaders and their families. The agents usually fulfill their duties covertly, and they do whatever is needed in their areas of service to ensure the safety and quality of life to which U.S. citizens are entitled by virtue of their citizenship.
In a similar way, Christians are assigned tasks by God to investigate, be watchful of, the fraudulent workings of the enemy and to counter his tactics. We are also called to protect, or cover, our spiritual leaders. The foremost method of fulfilling these responsibilities is through our prayers, but we also engage in other areas of service as needed, which is required by our citizenship in the Kingdom of God.
Many times, these duties are carried out covertly, behind the scenes, and few people tend to notice those secret servants. Sometimes it is by design, and sometimes it is just the nature of their area of service. But our service in the Kingdom is not contingent upon recognition or validation by others, but by God alone (“Well done, good and faithful servant!” Matt. 25:21 NIV). Our satisfaction for a job well done comes from God not from men (“Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:4, NIV).
All of us are called to minister in some form or fashion, and some of those ministries are more visible than others, but not any one part of the church body is less important than the other. Not everyone is a hand or a foot, or an eye or an ear, but all are important for the effective ministry of the body of Christ (see 1 Cor. 12).
