Miracle Stories
ANGELS IN MEXICO
The warmth of the golden sun was just beginning to set over the blue Pacific Ocean as we began our caravan back to California after spending the weekend in La Bufadora Bay, a hide-away south of Ensenada, Mexico. My parents, brother, and sister were in the Volkswagen Bus ahead of us, as my boyfriend Dick and I, followed behind in a small light blue Volkswagen Bug, back to the States.
The road south of Ensenada, was a two-lane road, and the only road in or out of La Bufadora Bay. We were familiar with that road, as our family traveled to Mexico several times monthly to our “get-a-way” spot for fun in the sun! La Bufadora Bay was famous for its Blow Hole and has recently become a major tourist destination. My parents owned a modest trailer that overlooked the beautiful blue water of La Bufadora Bay where we spent countless hours as a family swimming, snorkeling, fishing, and horseback riding over white sandy beaches.
We were all aware of the danger of driving in Mexico in 1968. It seemed as if most of the Mexicans drove broken down cars. If the cars weren’t dilapidated, we guessed that there was a game as to how much tequila could be consumed and how fast they could drive. There seemed to be a disregard for the safety of others. Accidents were plenty on this dangerous stretch of Mexican highway. It was on this two-lane road that our miracle was to take place.
Before we left La Bufadora Bay to head northwards towards Ensenada and San Diego, my Dad gave very specific instructions to Dick about how we were to caravan. He did not want to lose sight of us. Those were the days before cell phones, so it was imperative that we all stayed together, at least until we got into San Diego, and safely back inside the United States. We were instructed to stay close, and when he passed or changed lanes, we were to follow, without question. Dad said he would always be sure that he would only pass when it was clear enough for both cars.
So, off we went, a little sunburned, caravanning home after a great weekend. We hated to go home and get back to the real world of school and jobs!
We had been on the road for less than forty-five minutes when our adventure began. I remember clearly the moment that this all happened. Driving the two-lane road, we noticed that it was fairly empty of traffic, an oddity for a Sunday evening. We were making good time when all of a sudden we came upon an old rickety truck desperately overloaded with people and crates of squawking chickens. The truck couldn’t have been traveling any faster than 25 to 30 mph. Looking ahead, believing that there was no oncoming cars, out around this old truck went my parent’s car, and per dad’s instructions, we directly followed.
Immediately, seemingly out of nowhere, we were all facing an oncoming car traveling at a high rate of speed. With all the force he could muster, dad sped up, passed the truck, jerking the car he was driving over into the right lane, safely passing the truck, just in the nick of time! My Mom, aware of the danger, immediately turned around, looking at the car her daughter was in, screamed out loud, “In the Name of Jesus!”
Instantly, the car Dick and I were in, literally lifted up off the ground, and moved back into the safety of the right lane, behind the truck, as the oncoming car flew past us. This all happened in a split second of time. Dick was quite overcome and visibly shaken. He kept repeating over and over, “I didn’t do that, I didn’t do that.”
Mom believed she literally saw the car we were in supernaturally lift up off the highway, and move back to the safety of the right lane.
We stopped along the side of the road a little shaken, and gave thanks to God for what we believe was the protection of Angels. God does give His Angels charge over us. We experienced it!
To this day I have never doubted the protection of God and the power of prayer. My mom prayed a quick prayer and we were protected. As a Mother and now a Grandmother, the remembrance of this incident has always brought me comfort and courage. I will never forget the miracle! I know that Angelic protection is real!
