Encouragement
Dreams—sometimes they make an impression for a lifetime. This poem is based on an actual dream I had in the mid 1980s. The dream was so vivid that I still remember much of it. I wrote this poem of my heavenly dream in 2000.
In my dream I awoke to find myself on a grassy hillside surrounded by people. There were crowds of people and many of them were welcoming me. There was a lot of love there. One of the first things I noticed was the beauty of this place—it was captivating. Everything seemed so brilliant and alive. There were grass covered mountains, trees (I don't remember what kind), a large, placid lake, and the bluest sky I had ever seen. There were no clouds or sun. I sensed God's presence, but did not see Him. I walked down the hillside with the people.
In the next scene of my dream I was taken on a tour through a beautiful flower garden. The flowers were the loveliest I had ever seen. What delighted me the most were the colors of the flowers--they were very vibrant and dazzling. The hues of red, blue, and yellow bouquets filled the garden. The blooms were so full of life it seemed that I could communicate with them.
After my tour of the garden, I was watching families ride bicycles. I was thinking that I too wanted to ride. All of a sudden, I was on a bicycle riding along the countryside feeling so free….then I woke up.
As I was waking up, I felt this incredible presence of God’s love surrounding me. It was so strong that I didn’t want to wake up; I wanted to bask in His strong love forever. The strong sense of God’s love stayed with me for quite awhile. This was the most vivid dream I ever had. I believe this dream was a gift from the Lord. When there are times I feel discouraged, I just think about my dream—it gives me hope knowing that one day I will be with my Savior, forever.
William O. Cushing had a vision about heaven. He wrote a song called, “Beautiful Valley of Eden.” The chorus goes—“Beautiful valley of Eden, home of the pure and the blest, how often amid the wild billows, I dream of thy rest, sweet rest.” I’m sure our dreams of heaven are just a blurry snapshot of what that place will really be like.
One night I dreamt in peaceful slumber,
Of heaven above and all its wonder.
Of brilliant flowers and towering trees,
Of lofty mountains and calming seas.
Many people were there, young and old,
They all had stories that were told.
But above it all the Lord was there,
His love shone through for all to share.
When I awoke I had a feeling,
Of a powerful love so revealing.
It was so strong it was hard to wake.
I wanted it to last forever, it was hard to shake.
I knew whom this dream was from,
It was a gift from the Son.
A promise that one day, forever,
I’ll meet Him in all His majestic splendor.
