With a Great Trumpet
Part Six of the Eight Feasts of YHWH
By David Wiseman
“Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘In the seventh month, on the first of the month, you shall have a Sabbath, a memorable acclamation, a holy gathering.’” Leviticus 23:24 (LITV)
This is the feast that is traditionally called Rosh Hashanah, “Head of the Year,” but is in Scripture as Yom Taru’a, which is “Day of Blowing.”
According to Leviticus 23:24, Yom Taru’a begins on the first day of the seventh month of the year, which was formerly the first month of the year, until Exodus 12:2.The Hebrew word for month is Chodesh. Chodesh literally means “moon” or “new moon” because each month begins at the new moon. Yom Taru’a is the only feast that is on the first day of the month. The feast begins as soon as the new moon is sighted, but no one can be sure of exactly when that will be. The watchmen would stand on the hills around Jerusalem and when the moon was sighted, they would blow trumpets, to alert everyone that the moon had been sighted. That is why it is a “day of blowing.”
As soon as the trumpets were blown, those that were working in the fields would drop what they were doing, and come in and begin the Feast.
This is what Y’shua was talking about in Matthew 24:36 when He said, “But of that day and of that hour, knoweth no man, nor even the angels of heaven, but the Father only.” (Murdock) Even with modern technology it is impossible to say when the moon will become visible to the naked eye. It is possible to say when the moon will technically reappear, but it is only possible to guess within roughly forty-eight hours when it will be visible. There is also the problem of clouds. If there are clouds the night the moon appears, then who is to say when it will be sighted?
Y’shua also echoed Yom Taru’a in Matthew 24:31, “And he will send his angels with a great trumpet and they will collect together his elect from the four winds, from one extremity of heaven to the other.” (Murdock)
He sends His messengers with a great trumpet, like the trumpets of Yom Taru’a. The gathering at Yom Taru’a as described in Matthew 24 does not refer to a snatching up to the Heavens. It says in verse 30 that He will come in the Heavens in the clouds in glory. How was He present with Israel in the wilderness? He was in a cloud. In the same way He will come again.
As it says in Matthew 24:22, “And unless those days should be cut short, no flesh would remain alive. But, for the elect's sake, those days will be cut short.” (Murdock) If the days are being cut short for the sake of the elect, then the elect must still be on Earth at that time. Otherwise, there would be no people left at the end.
Numbers 29:1 says, “And in the seventh month, on the first of the month you shall have a holy gathering; you shall do no work of service. It shall be a day of blowing the trumpets to you.” (LITV)
The word for “blowing,” which is Taru’a, is not only an alarm and a battle cry, but also a joyful shout and a public worshipful singing, like a “worship service.” There is a great deal more to this feast than merely blowing a trumpet. It is a reminder to thank YHWH for the returning of Y’shua to rule the world. But there is also the element of a cry of distress in this word. Paul said in Romans 8:23, “And not only they, but we also in whom are the first fruits of the Spirit, we groan within ourselves, and look anxiously for the adoption of sons, the redemption of our bodies.” (Murdock)
This is not only a day to praise YHWH, but also a day to call out to Him for the return of the Messiah. In Numbers 29:2 it says, “And you shall prepare a burnt offering for a sweet fragrance to Jehovah: one young bullock, one ram, seven yearling lambs, perfect ones;” (LITV)
As it says in Revelation 8:3-4, “And another angel came and stood by the altar; and he held a golden censer: and much incense was given him, so that he might offer, with the prayers of all the saints, upon the golden altar before the throne. And the smoke of the incense of the prayers of the saints went up before God from the hand of the angel.” (Murdock)
This sweet fragrance is equivalent to the prayers of the saints when they call out to YHWH for the return of Messiah, as it says in Revelation 6:10, “And they cried with a loud voice, saying: How long, O Lord, thou holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?” (Murdock)
It is important to see that in Revelation 8, where the incense is talked about it is just as the seven trumpets are about to be blown. These trumpets again echo Yom Taru’a. It is also important that John’s vision of the end begins, in Revelation 4:1, with a voice that sounds like a trumpet. YHWH’s voice takes on many kinds of sounds. It is described as like “many waters” and “a rushing wind” and “thunder,” so this time begs the question, why a trumpet? Because it is Yom Taru’a. What else were the trumpets of Yom Taru’a than for calling the people up?
Paul mentions the trumpet in I Corinthians 15:52, “suddenly, as in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet, when it shall sound; and the dead will arise, without corruption; and we shall be changed.” (Murdock) Here again, the trumpet is referring to the returning of Messiah leading up to the great day of judgment.
