“There’s Nothing Quite Like…”
By Dan Blankenship
“…a Christian bookstore.”
For a believer that this world is not my final destination, there is a great deal of information about my homeland found in a Christian bookstore. I am truly like a kid in a candy store when I’m surrounded by books, paintings, and home decorations all crafted to educate, elevate, and demonstrate the ministry of Jesus Christ and His loving Father.
If I had a million dollars when I walked into a Christian bookstore, I wouldn’t have it when I left. But the information and spiritually-centered items I would leave the store with would be worth more than the green material used to purchase them. I just can’t read enough Christ-centered books, view enough Christ-centered paintings, or hear enough Christ-centered music.
Fifteen months ago, a new Christian bookstore opened not too far from my home. The store is appropriately called Seed Sowers. It is one of the sharpest looking, well organized, and well stocked Christian bookstores I have had the pleasure of visiting.
I recently interviewed owner and operator Mel Huitsing about his store, his reasons for opening such a store, and his advice for others who may be considering doing the same.
[Dan] What influenced your decision to open your own Christian bookstore?
[Mel] I wanted people to have a local place to shop for Christian supplies, and I wanted this store to be a way to help plant seeds in the lives of unsaved people. Everyday is a ministry opportunity.
[Dan] What has been the most difficult phase of getting such a business off and running?
[Mel] Making people aware we are here, advertising, and making decisions on what products the Christian market is looking for.
[Dan] Can you give me an example of one customer who left your store with a better understanding of what salvation is all about?
[Mel] I had the opportunity to share Christ with an 82 year old lady on a rainy Saturday evening three weeks after we opened. She came to Christ that night – a true blessing. That’s why we’re here.
[Dan] What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your own Christian bookstore?
[Mel] Helping people who are struggling with personal or church related problems.
[Dan] What would be your top three suggestions to anyone thinking about opening a Christian bookstore?
[Mel] Location is key to the success of your store. Where advertising is concerned, you should always have several things going on at once. Remember to build your store around the need of your specific market and location.
[Dan] If people find themselves traveling through Northwest Indiana and would like to stop in and visit your store, how can they find you?
[Mel] Seed Sowers Christian Bookstore is located in St. John, Indiana. Our address is 8229 Wicker Ave., St. John, IN 46373. Our phone number is 219-365-4035 and people can visit us online at www.seedsower.net.
