Torah’s not so Tough
By David Wiseman
There are 9,833 sections in the tax code of the United States of America. There are 317 sections in the penal code of the State of Texas. There are more than 400 sections in chapter 5 of the Los Angeles municipal code alone. No one thinks twice about this, when only those laws documented approximately here add up to 10,550. This is a miniscule representation of the incredible number of laws in the United States of America, and yet everyone is merely expected to keep them. It does not seem like an unreasonable thing to anyone for someone to be a “law-abiding citizen.”
At the same time, theologians declare that it is impossible for anyone to keep the whole Torah. There must be a lot of laws, if it is harder to bear than the literal hundreds of thousands of laws of the United States. In fact, in the Torah, there is a sum total of 613 laws. This measly sum is what has held theologians and ministers in horror for generations. Not only that, but also several hundred of these 613 laws don’t apply at present because there is no Temple or Tabernacle. What are two or three hundred laws compared to hundreds of thousands?
Y’shua said, “for my yoke is pleasant and my burden is light.” In Matthew 11:30 (Murdock) He did not make the Torah a burden, but a delight, as the psalmist says, “Make me walk in the way of Your commands, for in it I delight.” Psalm 119:35 (LITV) and Paul echoes in Romans 7:22, “For I rejoice in the law of God, in the interior man.” (Murdock)
And yet, Romans 3:23, “for they have all sinned, and failed of the glory of God.” (Murdock) and again, Isaiah 64:6, “But we are all as the unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as a filthy cloth. And we all fade as a leaf, and like the wind our iniquities take us away.” (LITV)
Everyone is guilty of breaking the Torah. That is why Ephesians 1:7 says, “by whom we have redemption, and the forgiveness of sins by his blood, according to the riches of his grace,” (Murdock) Theologians use this to prove that, because everyone has broken the Torah, and there is forgiveness, no one needs to keep the Torah.
How many people have never once sped in their lives? How many have never driven without a seatbelt? How many have come to an absolutely complete stop at every stop sign they ever came to? How many people can actually claim to have never ever in their entire life have broken one single one of the hundreds of thousands of laws on the books in the United States of America? And yet, no one says that because it is virtually impossible to keep every single U.S. law, that no one needs to try. That would be rather silly.
Why would anyone make such a suggestion? They say that the only purpose of the Torah was to prove that no one could keep it. Is God really arbitrary like that? If He gave commands that were merely to show that no one could keep them, would it really be wrong to break them? Would He even be good if He did that? Why does He say He gave the Torah? Deuteronomy 7:11&14-15, “And you shall keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the ordinances which I am commanding you today, to do them…You shall be blessed above all people; there shall not be a barren man or a barren woman among you, nor among your livestock. And Jehovah shall turn aside every sickness from you; and He will not put on you any of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you have known; but He will put them on all who hate you.” (LITV)
Paul does not seem to think that the Torah was merely an arbitrary set of rules. In Romans 7:12 he says, “Wherefore, the law is holy; and the commandment is holy, and righteous, and good.” (Murdock)
Why, then, would anyone suggest that, merely because all have sinned, no one should try not to?
