Deborah: Answering God’s Call
Judges 4-5
When the Israelite people once again sinned before heaven, God handed them over to a Canaanite king named Jabin. Deborah, a prophetess, answered the call to lead her people. She became the third Israelite judge and the only female. During her tenure, the Israelites enjoyed forty years of peace.
She prophesied to Barak that he was to meet Jabin’s men, and their commander Sisera, in battle. When he told her that he would go only if she accompanied him, Deborah bravely entered the battle. The army of Jabin was destroyed, but because Barak did not follow her initial prophesy, the honor of killing Sisera passed to a woman.
Even though women were not widely seen in positions of leadership, Deborah faithfully answered God’s call with obedience and determination. Though she was not a soldier, when the situation presented itself, she went to war knowing that the Lord would protect her.
When God calls us, we must answer. Are we brave enough to follow God, even into battle? If we are, good, because that is where we are needed today— the battlefield. God can use us if we are willing to dig in and do whatever job needs to be done to save souls for the kingdom. You may be the youth minister, but if someone asks you to help serve lunch to the homeless, help them. God needs our service in all arenas.
Are you struggling with something that God has asked you to do that will move you out of your comfort zone?
