Jesus, Martha, Mary and Me
See Luke 10:38-42
There goes Martha! She’s running around like a crazy woman trying so hard to attend to every little detail to create the perfect dinner party. Meanwhile, her sister Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to Him teach. Then Martha approaches Jesus to complain about Mary doing “nothing” to help her. Jesus replies by saying, “Mary has discovered the only thing worth being concerned about. I will not take that away from her.” (Luke 10:42)
That familiar passage spoke to me a little differently this morning. I thought about how many times I run around trying to make the perfect ministry “thing” happen at the church. All too often I get caught up in all the minor details, trying to run the show while gaining approval from men. I can put forth my best effort in the planning, preparing and so on. But, truly the most important thing I should do is sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His teaching. That keeps me in my proper place and gives Jesus His appropriate place in my life. He above me. And lets face it, although planning is important and working hard always pays off, when God does something meaningful in the lives of those I am trying to minister to, it has little (if anything at all) to do with me and my attention to detail. God chooses the perfect timing to touch the lives of others. It’s all about Him and their relationship with Him. So, don’t be so concerned over the details. Keep drawing closer to Jesus and He will work out incredible things in your life as well as the lives around you. Was Jesus so concerned that Martha’s dinner was not going to be perfect? No, not at all. He was more interested in Mary making him Lord of her life.
