Devotional #14 in 1 Peter
“Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.” (1 Peter 2:6-8).
Jesus, the chief cornerstone (Matthew 21:42), is the elect of God and precious to Him and to us. Those who believe in Him will not be disappointed or ashamed. The cornerstone was the first stone laid during construction. Each succeeding stone had to conform to the standard set by the cornerstone. Christians today must conform to Christ in his spiritual house.
But to the unbelieving, disobedient viewpoint, it is a different matter. The builders – the Jewish leaders – had inspected Him and found that He did not meet their idea of what the Messiah should be. He was disallowed. Yet God has made Him the head of the corner. Jesus became, to them, like a loose pebble or a ledge sticking up in the walkway that they stumbled over. They stumbled at the Word – both the Scriptures and Jesus himself. They were appointed to stumble because they chose to reject the written Word and the Living Word, Jesus.
The Jewish leaders and their followers created a Messiah patterned after their ideas instead of from the Word. As a result, they were appointed to stumble over almost everything Jesus did and said.
But to us who believe, Jesus is precious. He is our Lord and Redeemer whom we love, obey, and worship.
