“ ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.’ This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’ ” John 21:18,19
There would come a time for Peter when he felt at the mercy of the hands of man as they carried him where he did not wish to go (martyrdom). But Peter must keep in mind that he would always be in the hands of God irregardless of where his walk with the Lord would take him.
Among the Lord Jesus’ last words to Peter at this time is ‘Follow Me’. Following Jesus would lead to Peter’s death but in the dying there would also be the glorifying of God. To follow the Lord here would lead to death but the next step would be a step into the eternal glory secured for him by the risen Christ.
One of Jesus’ first words to His chosen ones were ‘Follow Me’. The sustaining motivation for this following had to be love for Him in recognition of His grace-filled love for them.
The ending of His journey with them was but the beginning of their journey for Him. And the only road map given them were those clarifying words, which when heeded by them would assure they would never lose their way.....”Follow Me.”
