Is there such a thing as a prayerless Christian?
A prayerless Christian is a person who has convinced himself that he doesn't need God but any Christian knows he needs God.
Do you need God?
A prayerless Christian is a person who must think he has no sin.
Do you think you have no sin?
The Bible says, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23 and in Ecclesiastes 7:20 it says "There's not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not."
Believe it or not there are some mistaken people who believe they are Christians who have attained a sinless perfection but these people are deceived according to God.
The apostle John tells us if we say we have no sin we make Him a liar and His truth is not in us.
If we are liars and God's truth is not in us then we are not really Christians despite our profession.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
These verses are found in 1 John 1:9,10 and they give the lie to the "sinless perfection" crowd.
There's no such thing in reality as a prayerless Christian.
This idea is a contradiction.
The great Martin Luther who broke off from the apostate Roman Catholic church said "To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing."
I like that.
If you are a true Christian then you will pray.
Your prayers may be few and weak and without much substance but you will if you have the Holy Spirit at least pray "Abba Father!" Romans 8:15
It is assumed that a Christian or follower of Christ
prays by the many scriptures where Jesus says:
And when you pray..." Matthew 6:5
But when you pray..." Matthew 6:6
This then is how you should pray..." Matthew 6:9
So I say to you: Ask...;seek...;knock." Luke 11:9
Then Jesus told his disciples...they should always pray Luke 18:1
Paul tells us in Colossians 4:2 "Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving."
Notice Jesus said "When you pray" NOT if you pray.
So, if a person who doesn't pray claims to be a Christian he is deceiving himself.
Thus one of the distinguishing characteristics of a true believer in Christ is that he or she prays.
The same can be said for a so-called Christian who doesn't read the Bible. It's impossible that you can be a Christian and not read the bible.
That's why Jesus said "Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11
Jesus is the living Word or Bread upon which we must feed and His word, Bible, is the written bread upon which we must feed, i. e. the holy scriptures. It's not just talking about our physical necessities food and water and clothing. It's talking about the word of God.
Jesus is our Bread.
We must feed on Him as much as we do our daily food.
Just as food is for the body so the word of God is for our soul.
"Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4
There are many today who are nominal Christians, that is, they are Christians in name only. Howbeit, there is no substance to their claim.
We must prove or test ourselves said Paul to see if we are in fact true Christians or if we are just Christians in name only.
In 2 Corinthians 13:5 it says: "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?"
I find few pastors today willing to challenge and exhort their congregations to test or prove themselves in this vital area.
Let us not deceive ourselves any longer.
If we are not praying and reading our Bibles then we are not saved and we need to beseech the Lord for saving faith and an evangelical repentance.
Only then can we lay claim to being true Christians.
