PROLOGUE
One of my favorite faith-based Christian songs is entitled “Ask The Blind Man, He Saw It All.”
This song is taken from the gospel account of Jesus healing the man born blind. It’s one of the miracles of Jesus in which He restored the sight of a man at the Pool of Siloam. Although not named in the gospel, church tradition has ascribed the name Celidonius to the man who was healed. The account is recorded in chapter nine of the Gospel of John. It was a good example of the exercise of one’s faith.
In Hebrews, chapter eleven, we have many examples of biblical faith. So my question is, has the modern world in general, and the American populace in particular, lost this kind of divine faith? I surely hope not. Although, from all appearances of America’s current progressive culture, I sometimes think so.
That’s the reason for yet another faith-based fictional parable, an earthly story with a heavenly meaning, entitled “Ask the Blind Man, He Saw It All.”
"But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:6)
The discussion around the Sunday night meal raged hot and heavy. It all sparked from our pastor’s Sunday morning sermon based on the biblical account of the blind man being healed.
The pros and cons around the evening meal that night sprang out like wildfire. It almost caused a family Hallelujah Breakdown. I guess I was the cause of it all, as I was very vocal in my skepticism of the results of the miracle. Although I have always had faith in our pastor, to me this event seemed a bit off base.
However, come dessert-time, we all had settled down to a large helping of my wife’s famous homemade banana pudding. I guess exhaustion from the heated discussion must have been what put me in another after-dinner snooze. Or, maybe it was the second helping of the pudding. I was quickly carried away into another of my true-to-life dream world encounters.
I found myself standing in the midst of an old abandoned church yard. The undergrowth on the property had long since taken over the old churchyard many years past. What is the purpose of this? Why am I here, and for what cause? I pondered. Surely, this church hasn’t had any religious activity in many years, so why me? Why here? Why now?
As if suddenly struck by providential lightning from above, I remembered. Why, it’s my old home church! It was the one pillar of our religious worship held together by our entire little community. We all grew up here. My folks, from the grandparents up through the entire family, including our young ones were dipped in the creek behind the cemetery, all confirming our new salvation in accordance with the Old Time Religion.
My wondering mind wasn’t fixed on the past for long, however. My attention was caught by the sound of a group gathered around the old monumental wooden cross.
This can’t be, I thought, for this old church hasn’t seen any activity in years. Nonetheless, my wonderment took over. I joined the bunch who were all looking at something and shouting over the blind man miracle.
Again, I thought, this just can’t be so. It was all the church Deacons of the past, gathered around him, all kneeling in prayer.
I moved in a little closer for a better look. “Why yes, in fact it is the blind beggar, who always sits out front of the old county courthouse, shouting so. This surely can’t be! Why all the praise and religious shouting now?
Again, as if by divine orders from above, I asked a nearby onlooker what was going on. “Why is this old blind man kneeling here in prayer and shouting so?”
His immediate response was, “Just ask the blind man, for he saw it all.”
Looking around, all seemed to agree with this assessment. They all were swift to join in with the divinely led shouts of joy and praise.
That did it. Not only was my dream over, but all was quiet, I hadn’t missed a thing. The wife was still cleaning up from the night meal. All the family was doing their usually nightly chores, except for gramps, he was enjoying his usual after-dinner snooze.
Had I missed my favorite Sunday night television Bible study? No, it had just started. As if by divine direction, the gist of the program centered around the biblical account of the blind beggar being healed. What an interesting discussion it was.
I guess, between our dinner discussion and the remarks of the television Bible study, I came to my senses. Our pastor was surely right. I must apologize the next time I see him.
Oh, well. “Dear, will you please bring me a coffee refill?” I requested as I settled back for another revealing biblical discussion.
What a providential dream it was. One for the books, all right! Don’t you agree, my fellow reader? Amen!
EPILOGUE
I trust you enjoyed this brief faith-based story. Its biblical account of true living faith is one of my favorites.
Faith is always tested for at least three reasons: to prove whether our faith is real, to help our faith grow, and to bring glory to the Lord. - Warren W. Wiersbe
According to Scripture, there are many more faithful things that Jesus did. If all of them were written down, I suppose that not even the world itself would have space for the books that would be written. (John 21:25)
Yes, regardless of today’s regressive society, the Scripture stands on its own proven merits. (II Timothy 3:16) shows us that all Scripture is inspired, the Bible came from God through the men who wrote it. For God superintended these human authors so that, using their individual personalities, they composed and recorded without error God’s Word to man.
(II Peter 1:20-21) shows us the dual authorship of God’s Word -The Holy Spirit guiding and guarding the men involved in the actual writing.
So in respect to faith. Faith gives us reality and proof of things unseen treating them as if they were already objects of sight rather than hope. So, “ask the blind man, he saw it all.” Amen!
