Hopefully you will take the time to read the previous installments of False Agendas Parts 1 and 2, to understand and feel the full impact of this narrative.
The initial year of my encounter with this group who referred to themselves as Black Hebrew Israelites was late 2018, when out of curiosity I decided to attend the Feast of Tabernacle celebration with some of their members. It was a chance encounter at a local grocery store, I did not know them prior.
As a Christian I naturally had a curiosity about the Jewish celebrations. But little did I know this was a Sect whose agenda took a twist from following the true foundational meaning of these celebrations. They appeared to use these "holy celebrations" to recruit new members.
It was a predominately segregated group with their own agendas which did not correspond with the traditional Jewish community. I personally found that the core of its mission was not that of love and brotherhood. But of some misguided bitterness against anyone who did not adhere to their views and doctrines, which obviously put them in opposition to most other faiths.
Based upon my own short-lived experience, thank God, I found the core spiritual nature to be militant and their teaching to be forced and brainwashing. They were prone to making false accusations against most other faiths to discredit them.
To my absolute horror, I later learned they were especially adverse to and offended by mainstream Christianity, which was unbeknownst to me when I decided to attend their Feast of Tabernacles celebration in September of 2018. And unbeknownst to me, this Sect had already hatched a viper that in 1974 executed damage of monumental historic proportion.
Here I am in the Spring of 2023 and only now fully understanding the fatal extent to which a disciple of this Sect, Marcus Wayne Chenault of Dayton, OH was an instrument to further afflict the prominent King family of Atlanta, GA almost 50 years ago. A family whose faithful works and dedication served all people of America to recognize the profound necessity for the reconstruction of Civil Rights, particularly for its Black citizens.
Marcus Wayne Chenault, in 1974 traveled 12 hours on a bus from Ohio to Atlanta with two stolen guns. He went to the Ebenezer Baptist Church home of the illustrious King family and proceeded to assassinate Mrs. Alberta Williams King, beloved mother of the late Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. This atrocity took place in the sanctuary of a Sunday morning service. One other church member, Edward Boykin was also killed, and Jimmy Mitchell was wounded but survived.
Upon his arrest Chenault was taken to the same hospital as his victims for mental observation. He encountered Rev. M. L. King, Sr. in the hallway, who asked him Why? Chenaut declared that "All Christians were his enemies." Chenault was initially sentenced to death, but by some course of action to do with his mental diagnosis and ironically the fact that the King family opposed the death penality, his sentence was reduced to life imprisonment.
The 12 hours Chenault traveled to accomplish his murderous spree might have proceeded further to Chicago and beyond. It was discovered that he had a "death list" of 10 names he intended to kill also. Some on the list were Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Aretha Franklin and Rev. Jesse Jackson.
The 12-hour trip Chenault traveled resonates with me as I too traveled 12 hours by car with a family of members (father, son and daughter) from Oklahoma City to a campsite somewhere in Indiana to attend their Feast of Tabernacle celebration. Seemed innocent enough. But I did find the son to be the militant type. The young daughter appeared rather naieve about the whole thing.
But throughout the journey, I was inundated with constant tapes of sermons enforcing their radical perspectives, along with some form of rap music. I soon realized that I was in the company of radicals who eventually became more open about their adversity to Christianity.
Upon arrival, I spent one night in a cold tent and shared meals the next day with what I preceived to be a naieve flock of about 50, who had also traveled there from other parts of the country. I had the chance to hear first-hand some of the browbeating speakers. After which I was openly asked my opinion. I do not remember my exact words, but I know that I was glad for the opportunity to very politely expresss that I was not impressed enough to forsake my Christian faith.
Fortunately, the trip was cut short, thank God. I was soon after approached by the father from my travel group, asking if I would be disappointed to cut the trip short? I assured him I would not be in the least disappointed to avoid sleeping on the ground in a cold tent another night. Praising God in my heart for His obvious mercy and divine intervention to deliver me from this entanglement I had gotten myself into.
But I still had the 12-hour trip to endure to get back to Oklahoma City. I must have been short of cash or something to not have abandoned this excursion at the first sign of discontentment, and caught a bus home. I rather felt like a captive. The general conflict of spiritual soundness as I knew it, hindered me from remembering that my cousin worked for Greyhound bus station and would have provided me a ticket to and from anywhere in the country. This was quite silly of me to go away ill-prepared with literal strangers. Although it curbed my thirst for adventure (for a while).
But I still cannot regret the experience, if for no more than to shed light on this Sect. Perhaps it was infact a divine assignment. However, I ask that you will stand with me in prayer that this expose' will not provoke them to come after me one day with an assassin's bullet.
Fortunately, I was not physically or verbally threatened by anyone during my close encounter with them in 2018. Perhaps I was perceived as a sympathizer, else why was I there. But the general conflict of spirit was most vexing. However, it was wonderful to see how the Lord delivered me back home safely, although a bit rattled from this unnerving over extended encounter.
Colossians 2:8
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
