Miracle Stories
In the fall of October 2012, my friend Randy and I would attempt to summit the highest freestanding mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro. It is a feat that only 45% of all the climbers who ever attempt it are able to accomplish, and one that would be nearly impossible for someone who was sick, but that’s precisely the predicament I found myself in.
With lots of prayers from friends and family, steadfast determination, and God’s amazing blessings, I made it to the summit and am here now to give Him all the credit.
The Journey That Began Halfway Around The World Was In God’s Hands
Most people were not aware of how sick I was just three days into our eight-day trek up Kilimanjaro. I managed to keep it secret from perhaps everyone but Randy. Just three days in and I was running a fever and had developed a cough and chest rattle.
I did everything I could to conceal it from our guides Marsu and Gaudence although, now that I think of it, it’s likely Nimus knew (our African version of a Napali’s Sherpa), having helped me dress into rain gear (it was snowing heavily) after reaching Lava Tower at 14,950′. I could barely put one foot in front of the other and we still had a strenuous journey to the base of the Barranco Wall ahead of us.
I knew that if our guides discovered how sick I really was, they would have called in a helicopter and my trip of nearly three-quarters of the way around the world would soon be at an end and I’d be heading home. I should note here that you should never do this; it was hugely irresponsible and incredibly dangerous for me to continue to push myself as I did. It is entirely possible that I could have endangered the lives of others, or even killed myself in my attempt for the summit.
A Desperate Call Home For Prayer
I’ll never forget the sat-call home that evening on day three of our journey asking for prayer. I knew I couldn’t make it any further. I was done, finished. I was completely and totally exhausted, not having eaten in days. I was running a fever, had a cough, and now I was frozen to my core. I would either be airlifted off the mountain or I would have to recover and find the strength to scale the Barranco Wall the next morning. I remember laying on my back and praying to God not to let me fail.
Meanwhile back in Baltimore Maryland, a friend of ours was praying and praying hard. In fact, she later told me that she had had a vision of angels lifting me up by the arms and carrying me up to the summit. There was some discussion surrounding the exact timing of her vision, but as miraculous as this sounds, I can attest to having set upright almost immediately after I prayed with renewed vigor and determination. To be honest, I wasn’t a hundred percent yet (nor would I be), but I could lift my head now and felt well enough to go on the next day.
I would make it up the side of the Barranco Wall the next morning and on to summit Kilimanjaro. It would be a painful, agonizing journey, but I know that without intercession and God’s angels lifting me up, I never would have made it to the top of Africa’s highest mountain.
God’s Plan Revealed
I have often asked myself, to what purpose did God have for seeing I made it to the summit. I knew God had a plan, he always does. A predestined meeting with our driver Emanuel would soon occur that would change my life forever, and kick off the beginning of our Amazing Orphans International outreach.
