“So you also are complete through your union with Christ.” Colossians 2:10
We are incomplete without Christ in our lives. Only he can fill the emptiness in our hearts. God didn’t design human beings to function without him.
A car is made to transport people but they need petrol to do that. These days we hear about homeless people sleeping in their cars. You don’t need petrol if you’re only going to sleep in your car, but that’s not their purpose, that’s not why they were made. Likewise, God made us and completes us by giving us His Spirit as our fuel. He gives us spiritual life, so we can function in the way God intends and fulfil the purpose he created us for.
However, being complete in Christ doesn’t mean being mature. Paul teaches new converts so that they become mature. “He [Jesus] is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ” (Colossians 1:28).
Maturing is a process which doesn’t happen automatically. Paul encourages believers but not everyone commits to the process. Nevertheless, all converts are complete when Christ comes into their lives. As Peter says, “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him” (2 Peter 1:3).
A healthy baby is complete at birth. All they need is nurture and nourishment and they inherently grow. Likewise, we’re complete at our spiritual birth and God has provided everything we need to grow. We mature as we avail ourselves of the opportunities for spiritual nurture and nourishment. In Christ, we have all we need.
