I have much experience as a grumbler. Why the discontent? What is the cure? I also know how to praise. Praise and thanksgiving change my perspective. They help me see a life of abundant blessing rather than profound unfairness. I prefer the perspective of blessing. I am the one most punished by my grumbling.
Psalm 119:169-176 (CSB)
169 Let my cry reach you, Lord;
give me understanding according to your word.
170 Let my plea reach you;
rescue me according to your promise.
171 My lips pour out praise,
for you teach me your statutes.
172 My tongue sings about your promise,
for all your commands are righteous.
173 May your hand be ready to help me,
for I have chosen your precepts.
174 I long for your salvation, Lord,
and your instruction is my delight.
175 Let me live, and I will praise you;
may your judgments help me.
176 I wander like a lost sheep;
seek your servant,
for I do not forget your commands.
What is praise? How do we praise? There is much spoken and written on this subject. I want us to think of praise, in this moment, in a certain way. Think of praise as the thing that bubbles naturally out of your heart. In order to praise we must have a correct view of God, ourselves and our world. We must see things His way. The Psalmist poured out praise in response to God's statutes. To praise what God says is to acknowledge that His words are right, just and life-giving. We are familiar with this when we encounter something and want to share our joy with another. "You should see what I saw." "You should watch this great movie." “Did you see the sunset tonight?" Declarations of, and the desire to share life's greatest things and experiences is natural. So should our declarations of the truths about God and the truths about the things He has done for us. To recognize these things, we must be in His Word, keep our eyes open, align our hearts with Him, and transform our view of the world. Looking for His mighty hand and verbalizing praise and thanksgiving can serve to transform us from grumblers to blessed.
Give it a try.
Ephesians 5:18-20 (CSB)
18 And don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit: 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Will you pray this stanza of Psalm 119 as a prayer today?
