Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Psalm 62:2
In Jewish thinking, rock always means bedrock, every other kind of rock was a stone because it was movable. An example of this can be seen when Jesus responds to his disciples who were admiring the temple in Jerusalem, “‘Do you see all these great buildings?’ replied Jesus. ‘Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down’” (Mark 13:2).
What Jesus called stones, were enormous bricks. The average dimensions of stones in the Western Wall are one metre high by three metres long, with some even being twelve metres long. On average they would weight approximately thirty tons. By comparison, the stones that make up the Egyptians pyramids average between two and fifteen tons. Regardless of their size, they are called, stones. Whereas rock always meant bedrock, solid and immovable, which adds meaning when David calls God, my rock. He is our bedrock. He is our safety and security—our sure foundation.
Furthermore, God is our fortress which is another picture of strength and protection. David calls God his fortress and his bedrock—things that are solid and enduring. Therefore, David can say I will never be shaken. Not that he will never be upset or disappointed but rather, he will never be devastated by circumstances. Having such confidence in God, gave David great peace. Elsewhere he wrote, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).
Likewise, we can find peace when we know God as our Bedrock and Fortress. The One who is Sovereign, and in charge of his world.
