Bakery cakes! Bakery cakes are a treat and an adventure. Oh sure, they are not a homemade cake, but there is so much to choose from. Every time you cut a bakery cake, a decision has to be made. Do you want white or chocolate? Do you want an edge piece, a corner piece, or an inside piece? Which portion do you want? Once I was going to eat the green balloon on my grandson’s cake. My daughter warned me "oh you’re going to be in trouble. Your grandson has been waiting for the green balloon." So, I had to put it back because it was his portion. In life, we can take different portions.
Psalm 119:57-64 (CSB)
57 The Lord is my portion;
I have promised to keep your words.
58 I have sought your favor with all my heart;
be gracious to me according to your promise.
59 I thought about my ways
and turned my steps back to your decrees.
60 I hurried, not hesitating
to keep your commands.
61 Though the ropes of the wicked
were wrapped around me,
I did not forget your instruction.
62 I rise at midnight to thank you
for your righteous judgments.
63 I am a friend to all who fear you,
to those who keep your precepts.
64 Lord, the earth is filled with your faithful love;
teach me your statutes.
According to the Complete Word Study Dictionary, the word for portion is ḥēleq. It indicates a share or piece of territory. It is the booty or spoils.
As believers the Lord is our portion. This means that, in the bakery cake of life, when we choose a piece or one piece is reserved for us, it is the Lord. It is the best piece it is the piece that we’ve been waiting for and it is the piece that trumps all other pieces. It is the green balloon.
Salvation brings a total life renewal and makeover. What we once had is no more. What we have is new. It is the Lord. It is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It is Him as our portion. The ultimate piece of cake. The presence of God, His imputed righteousness, sanctification through the Holy Spirit, and eternal life.
We win the ultimate - God's presence.
Which portion will you choose?
Will you pray this stanza of Psalm 119 as a prayer today?
