Many years ago my son and I were in a Christian shop and we saw a WWJD sign, meaning of course "What Would Jesus Do?" My witty son leaned close to my ear and whispered, "Mom, I am pretty sure Jesus would turn over all the tables and run everyone out of the store!"
I chuckled at my kid's comment that day, but the remark has come back to memory several times since. That day in the temple, righteous indignation burned my Savior 's heart when He saw the merchants and money changers making profit off of men's worship. As the tables were toppled and the status quo upset, He revealed God's intense desire for true devotion and pure reverence from those who came near Him. We say that He cleansed the temple.
So sometimes I wonder, what WOULD Jesus do if He walked into our churches today? Would He applaud the performance of the rock star worship leader or would He knock over the amps and smoke machines and run everyone off the platform? Would He smile at the eloquent polish of a self improvement gospel or would His eyes burn in indignation because His flock was being fleeced? Would He sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee from the cafe or would He push the cash register off the counter? What Would Jesus Do? I am not really sure!
And to be quite honest, I sometimes wonder what would He do if He walked through my life? Would He find clutter that distracted my eyes from a true devotion? Would He see motives that were self-serving or manipulative that needed to be nailed to a cross? Would He approve of the way I spent my time? Would He smile at what I spent my money and energy on? Or would He find tables that needed overturned and rooms that needed cleansing?
I suspect that we all need to stop and do a spiritual check on ourselves occasionally. I urge you to take a little while away from your hectic schedule and settle yourself before the Lord. Let Him search you. Give Him full access to your heart. He may turn over a table or two, but He will do it in love. He will come and gently reveal those things that cannot abide the fire of His Presence so that He may lead you to true freedom.
What Would Jesus Do? I am pretty sure that Jesus would still cleanse His temple.
