Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. Mark 6:1-6a NIV
A statement which is known by many of us is familiarity breeds contempt. The people of Jesus’ home town felt they knew Him, and therefore they could not accept the teachings He shared nor the miracles which He performed. It is so sad that their familiarity caused them to not believe. Thus Jesus could not preform many miracles in their sight.
Do we know Jesus? Do we truly know Him? The more familiar we become with Him does our relationship intensify or do we become complacent? We must remember that Christ is the Son of God, and that everything which we have has been given to us. I do not ever want to be so familiar with my Savior that I cannot learn anything new nor become complacent in my relationship with Him. Relationships require work. We must continue to read God’s Word daily, spend time in prayer with the Lord, listen to the guiding of the Holy Spirit, and share the Good News with others. Christ has so much to offer us. Keep living in Him!
