THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD
The Foundation of Our Faith
By Henry Jaegers
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. (Hebrews 4:12,13)
This word follows immediately from the preceding thought concerning failure to enter into Christ's rest and to learn from the failure of the Israelites who failed to enter that rest because they failed to believe the word of God. Now we follow with the reminder that it is the word of God they failed to lay hold on. In these words, we have an admonition before us to learn what they did not concerning the importance of God’s word. In some ways we have the greater responsibility because we do not have all the miracles and history that Israel had, but we do, however, have the same word spoken by God and our response is that of faith leading to trust (rest).
When we speak of the "Word of God", we are not merely talking about something we read in the paperbound book. It is the words spoken by God upon which we must give careful attention. Unlike the word of men, it has the promises, the reliability and the character of God behind it. It is the word that we have been warned about neglecting and treating it casually. The words before us present a comprehensive analysis of that powerful word to which we must give our utmost attention. Consider:
1. It Is Quick.
That does not mean fast as in our modern understanding of the word, but it means that which gives life. Only the word of God can bring life. The words of men are full of incomplete understanding, and the knowledge of God's word is sure and something in which we can safely place our trust. Without this life-giving quality, we are still dead in our sins and blind to any of the glories and blessings that God wills to give to us. Remember the words of Jesus to Lazarus while he lay still in his graveclothes, and said unto him, "Lazarus! Come forth!". Just one illustration concerning that life- giving quality. To those who were dead in their sins and alienated from the life of God, we hear those words, "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved", and simply by trusting those words, the life- bringing experience begins.
2. It is powerful
How can it be otherwise? It is the words spoken by God with all the forces of heaven behind its promises. It is the word of God and it cannot fail. Our memories may fail, our good intentions may fail, and our greatest attempts for success may fail, but God's word is strong enough upon which we may place our faith. So reliable are his promises, that he brings true hope and rest to our souls. This hope produces patience, experience and purification as we learn time and time again that it is this powerful word that brings forth the rest and peace that he is promising in these chapters.
3. It is sharper than any two- edged sword
That penetrates deep into our innermost being and reveals those things which must be cut out of our lives. It cleanses as it removes those hidden things that hinder that blessed relationship that we have with him. Like a surgeon removing a dangerous cancer, so the word of God penetrates deep into our thoughts and brings to the surface, like form on polluted waters, that which must be removed.
4. Note His all- seeing eyes.
Our verse tells us he is ever searching, always seeing and is ready to do whatever is necessary to bring us to light an understanding with the purpose of guiding us daily into that blessed fellowship which he provides to those who are his faithful ones. Jesus promised, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled”. (Matthew 5:6)
In Psalm 139, we have the words of David as he cries out, “O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
(Psalm 139:1-6)
Notice his response is a model for us as we hear these words in verses 23,24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
These are the words we must keep in mind in order that we may walk in the truth and show forth that everlasting life to a world bound in darkness.
